Ok, I'm a bit putter illiterate here but have a question about the speed.
With my old dial-up, the speed was in Bps. With this new connection, it's Mbps.
The question is, is there 1,000 bites in one megabite.
The reason this is "floopi'n" around in my brain is, that with the dial up, I was getting 48 Bps..... and now I'm getting "about" 18 Mbps..... it is alot faster and no interruptions, other than I'm running off a wireless router and a "LONG" distance from the router.
(just trying to figure a bit here) :confused:

Isn't the higher speed nice?
It's not really available out here for me, so I'm running off a Verizon Mifi card. Top out at about 512 kbps (0.5 Mbps). Sometimes I go to McDonald's just to move files. :D
To answer your question, 1 Mbps = 1,000,000 (one million) bps.

YES it is...with my old dial up, I'd have to "rush" anything I was posting, typing as I was ALWAYS losing connection...it was "chaos" just trying to type here!!!!

NICE!!! :confused: Ive heard an know of kilobites with elcetric, but never put it with internet speed...never even croseed my "broken" mind! :confused:

All you have to know about speed is how long you have to wait for something to download or upload. Very Simple, not of that m stuff.:D:D:banghead:

Used to be, that say a download of 62MB's would take about 2-1/2hrs.
Now it takes "about" 30mins. (about)

I've tried em all over the years. A persons location matters. If you use it, choose the location that's farthest from you. Only test once. Any tests after that will show a faster speed unless you kill all thee cookies for the site. A lot of folks will do it over and over til they get a speed that looks good. :o

OMG Dial up! It was like two cans and a string compared to today's high speed.....if you could get on and stay on, and AOL was king, that's changed.
There are a lot of those DL/UL speed tests that ping your computer to check your connections and speed. Mine is:

I liked my old one that displayed it as a real time graph but it's OK.
Don't use ATT's speed test. Even their repair techs warn that it is not accurate. Speakeasy is the one they recommend.

Think of it like a water pipe. A 1" pipe can only move so much water at a time. But if the water company comes and puts in a 24" water pipe, you're moving a WHOLE lot more water in a certain amount of time.
1 megabyte = 1,048,576 bytes. x 16 = 167,772,216 bytes per second. So that's what your internet connection is capable of considering there is no latency.
So basically it means that your computer can communicate data at a higher rate every second. Latency is also a big part of how fast your internet connection is. Basically latency just refers to how much delay there is in communications between a network. So if you have a lot of delay but have one of those fast connections, you're internet connection is going to be really slow. Whereas low latency makes it very fast.

I will never do business with Comcast. They rat out people they think are downloading from torrent sites.

Tango, why the difference un the up/down speeds?
Shouldn't the upload speed be higher when the download speed is higher?

My current school is the hub for the network. There is a lot more traffic going out to the Internet than there is coming in to it. We limit streaming media like YouTube and Netflix or others. My school alone has 2200 students 200 staff and 850 computers in use 90% of the day. We have 5 high schools at that size. 8 middle schools running at about 1k students and 17 elementary schools running between 500 and 800 students. The elementary schools all have 300 pc the middle schools have about 500 and the high schools all have 850 computers.

I always wondered about something, where you have that many, I know they all have hard drives. But isnt there one main "dive" they feed from?

It depends. We have servers and network storage. Servers run some software and some is installed on the machines them selves. We are in the process of moving to a new set up because we are moving to win7.
In my old school all my classrooms had promethan active boards. These are an interactive white board that use a mounted over head digital projector. To run the boards we had one program. So I installed the software on my server and all the classrooms access it and I didn't have to install it on every machine.
On the new set up if there is something that needs to be updated for all the schools then the engineers will update it on the main server that will then push that update down to the satellite servers that will then push the update downto the pcs.
