dumb question....but whats the difference between single and double action?

With a single action, you have to manually cock the hammer, and then pulling the trigger releases the hammer. With double action, pulling the trigger cocks the hammer and then releases the hammer.

Also, unless it is DAO, Double Action Only, a DA can be hand cocked by pulling the hammer back as an alternate.
Most revolvers are DA (S&W) but many are SA (RUGER). Pistols may be either way. The most popular 1911A1, mil-spec .45 is SA as is the Browning Hi-Power, designed on John Browning's original semi-automatic design.
This is, of course, over simplified but will give you a good general idea along with SoMo's notes.
BTW, NO QUESTION is Dumb or overly simple. That's exactly why we are here. We have a fine bunch of congenial folks and a cummulative knowledge that you can't find anywhere else. Ask anything, any time and you'll get an answer.

Save me some of them drugs-- you guys are having way too much fun!
To the original question: In a singe action weapon, the trigger performs a "single action'- it releases the hammer. In a double action, the trigger (1) "Cocks" the hammer, then (2) releases the hammer.
'Course that definition would make an M-60 a single action weapon, huh?

Is that jumping through hoops, or putting out fires?
Maybe jumping through fires, and putting out hoops????

If'n my memory is working this mornin...which it useually dont...the trigger releases the bolt on a M-60. Don't it fire from the open bolt position?

Roger that - so do some Uzi's and Mac's its a failry common SubGun action.

BUT!!! do we all know why they are open bolt??? I'LL tell ya why. cuz their rates of fire are so fast and such that the chamber heats up so much that a round can cook off after you have taken your finger off the triger. SOOO the bolt stays open and keeps a round out of the chamber untill you pull the trigger. cuz in theory, not will all people, but when you pull the trigger they think you are ready to fire.

New guy here. With a SA you only have to manually cock it the first shot right? After that it works the same as a DA?

Treeppl... Thats true for an auto such as the 1911 designs that Marlin mentioned (after each shot the slide will recock it automaticaly), but a SA relvolver requires the shooter to manually cock the hammer back on each shot.
BTW, welcome to the club.

Sure guess it would, but y'all have to cock it twice!! :D :D :D :D

That makes a SA revolver sound kind of messy to use. Or at least slow enough to get you shot. No?

I don't know of too many people who would carry a SA as a defense carry gun. However, for hunting, there is nothing like a 45 Colt Ruger Blackhawk sporting a 300gr flat nosed bullet at about 1175 fps. Sure does mess up a Russian Boars day in a hurry!

I have an old (30yrs) Ruger single six thats SA .22LR that will shoot from the hip cowboy style, just cock hammer back pull the trigger and hold it then just keep hitting the hammer with your palm. I would consider that more like covering fire as it's damn near impossible to hit your mark with the gun bouncing around like that

Depends on how ya look at it bro, as you and Plano have mentioned, it would not make a good first choice for a carry gun, but it feels alot better than shooting a DA for target shooting/hunting to me...I just dont like that inherently long trigger pull of a DA, so I feel like even in a high stress situation I would be more accurate using a SA.
