Excellent varmint gun out to 200 yards, terrible plinking gun due to the overpriced ammo. I see .17's for sale everywhere, quite possible another has been caliber, I sold mine due to availability vs cost vs practicality.

I dont care for the tiny bore. requires special cleaning rods and jags that are flippin easy to break. But the HMR is a fine bunny duster. My dad had a marlin 917V when i was a kid. It was a tack driver.

great crow and varmint gun , yes expencive ammo and folks dropping them , i traded all my .17 XXX a while ago and went back to .22 wmr

when the .17 turns a $70 pelt into a $10 rag its over kill

I too favor the .22 cal ove rthe .17. bigger and slower has alot of merit with pelt hunters.

.17 can explode the jaw and tear the entire neck out

dunno what your coyote pelts bring but you want forward skull shots every time to keep the pelt , so much energy releasing at once is explosive at closer ( less than say 125 yards) ranges , i stuff a few pelts with em , they'll send bone fragments a long way with force ..

just for killing bad critters they are great , not cheap long term but great ..

i do not recommend for anything you want to keep ...

For me the mach2 is the way to go. Not quite the range, but it costs half as much to shoot. Bridges the gap between the .22lr and the smaller centerfires like the .204, .223, etc.

they fly straight fast and hit hard and if you unload the projectile and load heavy

you can use em on some big beastys head shooting

couple chopper based feral shooters i know do it that way for camel and donkey

but they fly to within 100 yards max and closer to shoot

I shot a wild dog here ( just a big mongrel but a lot of alsation or shepherd in it) with one and dropped him at 150 and a bit , a iffy shot with a .22 , no worries for the .17 and i've no use for the hide ..

will knock a bunnies head clean off no worries too

but now for range i'm back to 22-250 and reloading and think its way cheaper and gives me more spectrum ..

Nasty little round. I have a Marlin XT 17HMR . Got 4 Hogs with it so far this year all around 150lbs. got 2 Hogs 2 weeks ago. Out to 150 yards It's accurate as Hell

anything smaller is overkill

never understood why they marketed them as a bunny gun here

And in that regard, compared to what they do market as hog guns (.308 and .30-06), they are cheap to shoot.. 15 a box compared to 30 a box for .308s

When we run our hog traps for meat we take our rimfire pistols and a good sharp knife.

I like my Savage 17 HMR. The round is superbly accurate and cost is higher than .22 lr bulk, but inline with some premium .22 lr fodder. I buy several boxes when they go on sale at the local box store, sometimes less than $10.00 for the FMJ. I don't spray the landscape with my 17 like some people do with their .22 lr, so 100 rounds or a bit more is good for a shooting session. Also I like the sound of my 17 HMR; it sounds more like a centerfire than a .22 and that adds to the fun. I have been shooting my 17 at small Arrowhead water bottles, 6 oz. or so, and it gets boring with consistant hits at 50 yds. The 17 Mach II seems to be dying, but the 17 HMR is alive and going strong with a lot of fans out there...

I love my .17 HMR, I can literally drive thumb tacks at 100yds. If i can see it clear enough the .17 will hit it.

CZ just had a Quad that came out in the newest Guns & Ammo towards the back of the mag. Same as the Sako Quad HMR, .22, .22 Mag and the "dying" mach 2. If it was dying CZ wouldn't be dropping this new Quad.

The mach 2 shoots a .17 caliber bullet that is used in the .17 Remington centerfire, the .17 HMR, and the NEW .17 Hornet centerfire. And, it utilizes a necked down regular .22 lr case that will probably be around for a while. I don't see them getting rid of .22 lr cases or the .17 caliber bullet. Don't think the mach 2 will be dead anytime soon. I think the .380 will die out before the mach 2.
