depriming on Lee BL Challenger press

newbie here. i am finally getting around to setting up my Lee press i got for Christmas. i'm decapping some .40S&w brass and the old primer is coming out of the slot on the right side of the ram instead of into the primer catching bowl and down the tube. why?

Because you probably don't have the priming ram installed.

yes howlnmad is right,i had the same thing happen,even though you are not priming,a ram must be put in to divert the spent primers to the tube
