Found another gun in my closet...Winchester 61 # 240882 (1956?). It is near perfect. However, it has a scope...Weaver "22 Tip Off" #2803907. Looking for some help with value and advice if this a shooter or a display gun. Thanks!!

Is this a grooved receiver or is it drilled and tapped for the scope?

Grooved. The scope seems to be held in place with a clamp type piece.

OK.....a couple of more questions.

Round or octagonal barrel, and how is the caliber marked on the barrel of the gun (exactly as it's written on the barrel)?

You have a very desirable Model 61. Grooved receivers are scarce and highly prized. Too busy to look up the value, I'll leave it to someone else, but certainly not less than $500 to $600 as the condition looks great.

Yup......WW nailed it.

Model 61 w/grooved receiver Blue Books at:

98% - $720
95% - $600
90% - $480

Go ahead and shoot it if you want.....but be real careful of it. :)

My research indicates my estimate was right on the button.

Throwing the book out on these Winchesters.................I would estimate $700 to $800 in that condition. Mine was made in 1958 and looks new, only marking is under the slide on the magazine and no dings or marks on the stock. Mine also appears to never have been fired, but I have no way to prove it. I paid $900 for mine and just turned down $1,100. There is a feeding frenzey out there on model 61 and 62 Winnies!

Thanks for all of the help. Will any modern .22 rim fire rounds be ok to shoot?

The barrel states .22 Short, Long or Long Rifle!

It's a strong action and will take any .22 ammo made today, including hyper velocity rounds. I have two, one 98% which I shoot regularly, and one 100%.

As for values, I see a fair number of these for sale here in the southwest, but they rarely go over $600 unless they are NIB or a scarce variation such as smooth bore, or .22 magnum. These go from $900 to $1200. I haven't seen a common one go over $600 unless NIB with factory tags and instructions.
