I always assumed it was. It only makes sense. The German and Dutch settlers learned english in the early days of the U.S. when they outnumbered the english speakers in most places they set up shop like parts of Pennsylvania. I don't see why all the imigrants are so against learning english anyway, it is the number one, most spoken language in the world, and I don't know who planted this idea in their heads but learning one language does not make you forget your old one, you can know more than one.

Ja doch, Herr Dawg. Wir sprechen Deutsch einsig! Heute die Vereinigten Staaten, morgen die Welt! :D ;) :p
Seriously, a language is indeed part of the identity of any nation. To dilute or even dissipate that language is to lose that identity . . . which is precisely what is happening in this country today in the name of "cultural diversity."

Each nation should have an official language. Some have several, but it leads to confusion and bigotry.
An equally important question should be what cultural attributes are you transferring to your children? It will always be what did the children receive from the previous generation.
I voted English of course.

Sackett, Canada has two official languages, english and french, because the French got here about the same time as the English and were pretty well established in Quebec by the time we got around to becoming a country. I don't know if the language is the cause but we have had some problems with the french speaking public over the years. Do some research in to the FLQ, think IRA only on North American soil and without quite as many guns. Nowadays there is a major group in Quebec which wants to separate from Canada, become a sovereign nation but still fall under the protection of our military and use our currency. One of their major platforms is how french is under-represented in Canada even though it is law that every product label on a product sold in Canada has to include both languages.

My point exactly, bunny. The whole bloody idea is absurd, especially since the number of languages spoken by citizens in this country must number in the hundreds, if not the thousands. By the same reasoning that places Spanish on the phone menu, we must logically give the same option to any other minority language that might be incidentally spoken in this country by any group of citizens, from Friesen to Swahili. Hey, I can get along in Latin. Why not include that one too? Let's hear it for the Tower of Babel, which is precisely what we're headed for if the liberals have their way. We're headed for a loss of any true American identity, the American culture submerged itself into a vast milieu of cultures and languages and there to die.

I had thought this issue was settled back in the 1700's, when we went with English instead of German.

While the U.S.A. does not have an "official" language in the sense that there is no explicit law stating such, it does, indeed, have an official language: English.
Think on this: The founding documents and all official documents since have been written in English. Our Constitution is written in English, the Declaration of Independence is written in English (could have been written in German, so George III could read it), our laws are written in English. Therefore, by implicit declaration, our forefathers instituted English as the de facto official language.

English? It is. So, why question it? I speak it, and so on .... English is the official language of this country - has been since the beginning, and always will be.

I don't understand the question -

English is the Offical language of the U.S. I would support an offical ammendment making it a class 1 misdemeanor if you do not speak it. And for those just coming to our country legally they should be given one year to learn our language or be deported. How is that?

Deutsch veilleicht, oder Latein, aber nicht Spanische! :D ;)
Seriously, many people do not truly understand the role language plays in a culture. Language is the unifying force, the "glue" that holds the various subcultures within an overall culture together. To remove that glue is to destroy that unity.

If you want a good dose of multi-lingualism(?), go into your friendly local DMV and check out the posters on the walls.

I think the french Canadians are a pesky-pushy bunch. My sister lives in Lethbridge Alberta in one of the suposed english speaking areas & we always run into some of the "kaybeckers" there who speak only french. I understand a little but I always answer them in english. Somehow they always act offended. While we were visiting Paris lately I thought it was interesting that english is heard on the street almost as often as french. Every frenchman we spoke to on the street there spoke very good english. All the advertising signs in paris are now written in english. Seems like english is spreading rapidly around the world just not here in the states. Everyone here is feeling hamstrung by political correctness. I speak spanish but I always make spanish speakers here in utah speak to me in enjglish. When I go to spanish speaking countrys I always speak spanish. To speak english there would be out of line. Right? Same goes for here in the states & speaking english.

How about you most show you can speak English before you can enter. After all, its about a 5-10year wait to come here legally. I think learning the language of the contry you want to join should be a PRErequisit.
I think someone was looking for the first 100% opinion poll.:D
