Hi Folks,
Stan Lambert introduced me to your forum. I've read most of the posts. Looks like a very active group and I'll try to fit in.
I'm probably older than most of you (and some of you collectively). I'm 62. Retired from the Navy in early 79. Most time was spent as a communicator on submarines, surface craft and as an aircrewman on EC130Q aircraft. Retired as an MCPO and loved every minute of it (almost). Spent 20 years on Guam after retiring working telecommunications. Now living in the hills of N.C. and enjoying life. Active with the Mobile Riverine Forces list. Pulled two tours in Nam. First with Junks out of An Thoi and with the Coastal Surv. Center there. Then a couple of months on LST838. Went back to a 35 week Vietnamese language school in Ft. Bliss, Tx., then back in-country to the Naval Advisory Group. I have remained proficient in the language both written and spoken. Went to Utapao, Thailand after they ran us military people out of country in March 73 and was there for the fall on April 30, 1975. Have made two return trips to Vietnam in the early 90s. Do a little internetting, (totally computer illiterate), make Native American crafts (hand made pottery, hand chipped arrowheads, dreamcatchers, etc..etc..). They are sold at the Cherokee Indian Reservation here in N.C. Like to write, like to read. Seven kids (all grown and gone) and seven grandkids. (Damn! I feel old.) That's it in a nutshell. Looking forward to the company.

Not sure how you ever started running with the likes of Stan there Catcher...you don't sound like a drunk!.

I say that cause Ole Stan is a great guy and all...we love him to death here but the truth be known(and I'm known as MR. Truthful here) but anyways...Stan spends alot of time with his hands in his pocket playing with his Mouse(it's a wee little thing, but it still works and he's content with that)...

in addition he's the Official Donut Maker here and his Staff is Ample to say the least(even the bearded Gal???).

Lastly if you can't find him selling his Donuts around town here...check atop the juke-box at The Boom Boom Lounge...he sleeps it off there.

Welcome to Town Catcher! A good bunch here and hope to see ya on the flip.

Psst!...how do you feel about loaning friends money?

Dreamcatcher,

Welcome to our board and now your new home on the Web. I look forward to your posts. I would love to hear about your return trips and your memories of the Fall in 75. No rush though, for now relax and meet the crew, alone with Donna there are lots of great people waiting to say Welcome Home.

Thanks for the welcome Homer. (I guess that's better than a triple, huh?) and for the heads-up on Stan. One of life's lessons I've learned the hard way is: "It is better to borrow money from friends than to let friends borrow money." Perhaps Stan will throw some "P" on you since you had so many good words about him. (That's P like in Piaster)...Thanks, again.

Homer is familiar with everyone in the Boom Boom Lounge.
He hangs there constantly hitting us up for loans and free
beer.
It has become his home away from home. Sometimes we
let him sleep it off in the backroom after a brawl.

Gotta keep an eye on him.

Dreamcatcher-welcome to the board! It's always good to see new faces (means new stories for us junkies!). Welcome home and that you for your service.

P. Gary-I think you made a typo, but it gives the post a whole different and rather funny meaning. Check out what you typed about the gang and Donna. (Hmmm, maybe that wasn't a typo after all.)

Dreamcatcher,

Great to have you on board. I know you will enjoy visiting with us as much as we have enjoyed sharing your poems.

Everyone here has a great sense of humor so sit back, relax, loosen your tie and enjoy.

Now I have to work much harder to find new material! (LOL)

Welcome aboard Catcher.
I spent my time in country on LST-902 in 66-67.
Your resume sounds like you have lead a very interesting life.

When stationed in Norfolk, I would occasionally spend time in the hills in NC. I think it was a town called Belmont or Bellmond.

Good to have you hear.

Hi REMF, fellow tarheel,
You're right about the REMFs. Some had some pretty plush living arrangements. I think they get pinged on a little too much. Everyone over there had something to do. Something important. True, those in the cities had less chance of getting hit in an ambush or catching a round in a firefight, but every single REMF in-country stood the chance of coming face-to-face with a sapper or waking up to the music of incoming mortars and rockets. That's why a lot of the bars had wire over the windows - too many bike riders lobbing grenades in to liven up the party. If the yeomen weren't fixing up the papers for you to DEROS on time, or if the storekeepers weren't ordering beans and bullets, if the cooks didn't have a fresh jug of bugjuice when you came off patrol, if the commo folks didn't send the request for air or sea support to the right people -- things just sorta went down hill. Where you went and what you did had a lot to do with chance....needs of the service. Nobody was sent over there because it was such a great place to party. Everyone had a job to do and no one job was more important than the other. Some jobs were more exciting than others but everyone was needed. Everything sort of meshed together. Pull one cog out of that gear and everything grinds to a halt. That guy that put paper in the heads could really screw up a good day if he wasn't doing his job. Especially if Uncle Ho's revenge was alive and well! It wouldn't get you killed but it would sure take your mind off what you were supposed to be doing for a few minutes. Most of the guys I knew who worked in a REMF job would have given up a highly prized gonad to be sent out in the field. But it was the luck (?) of the draw. It would have been a rough war if everyone was out shooting Charlie and nobody was taking care of the shop! Thanks for the welcome. /larry/

Hehe! Catcher! A quick and witty reply bud.

As he turns to leave having shaken Catcher's hand..."I believe I'm goina like this guy...heard he writes some Poetry too,so I guess I'll wow him with my Roses are Red later on"...

"He'll appreciate another like unto him,as the Hawk did",smiling broadly.

Welcome DreamCatcher;
I was a heavy weapons gunner in a Light Infantry Brigade as you might have guessed. I am glad to have the Navy on board.
I always wanted to learn Vietnamese but it is difficult since the meanings change with tone or rythym. While I was there I bought a phrase book and learned to say a few things. it can be a beautiful language.

Thanks. I agree on the language. It can be a very beautiful language. You can say things in Vietnamese that just don't come out the same way in English. I was married to a Vietnamese lady for 20 years and we spoke nothing but Vietnamese. That's how I kept proficient. The neat thing about the language school I went to at Ft. Bliss was that a lot our dialogs were pertaining to Vietnamese history and culture...killing three birds with one stone...language, culture, history.
