. . . it just doesn't pay to get out of bed in the morning. Day before yesterday the wife and I got up to a soaking wet carpet in the bedroom next to the garage wall. Investigation disclosed that the hot water heater had burbled its last burble, but not before depositing its entire aqueous contents all over the garage and soaking through the wall into the boudoir. We went 24 hours without hot water (no showers!!!!!!) until the plumber could get out to replace it . . . and the carpet is still not dry! OK, I know, that's life, and appliances do wear out, but why the heck does that sort of thing always happen at the most inopportune time, as in when the old bank account needs a major transfusion? It's a liberal conspiracy I say!!! If I were a Democrat I could at least blame it on President Bush, but since I'm a Republican I think it must be Obama's fault, probably with the collusion of Hillary. ;):D

OK, we got the bloody hot water heater replaced. End of story, right? Not by a long shot! This morning we got up to discover that my wife's computer had bitten the dust sometime during the night, buzzed its last buzz, spun its last hard drive, burned its last CD. It couldn't be a simple hard drive crash. Oh no, that would be much too easy and inexpensive! Instead it had to be a fried motherboard. I may take it out to the range tomorrow and see how it likes a fusillade of .45 automatic fire right in the old CPU! Fair is fair, right? It would have to be judged justifiable computercide, by any court in the land, right Marlin?

So, it's buy a new computer time. Those bloody things are not cheap! And guess who got to spend the rest of the day setting it up and tweaking it so the wife is happy? "But honey, you know much more about computers than I do," which is undoubtedly true, since she can barely find the bloody ON-OFF discriminator switch on one. :D Oh well, maybe tomorrow will be better, or at least less expensive! One may hope.

1) if you got an energy star HWH, you can take a tax deduction
2) you can blame it on the reactionary wing of the Republican party without having to be a Democrat
3) you can just buy a new motherboard for less than two hundred bucks.

But do get that carpet dry like pronto, or you'll add allergist expenses to the total bill from the science projects that will grow in the pad.

Boy you ain't lying! I sure wish I stayed in bed on Friday, I had to fork up $2300 to repair my daggone Pontiac! Something about my suspension and a rod somewhere...geez...

In the final assessment, User, we judged it not to be worth the expense to replace the motherboard, but cheaper in the long run to simply replace the system with a more modern one. The computer in question was a rather old, low-end one (a Compaq) that had pretty much out-lived its usefulness. I did salvage the 80GB HD on it, along with several other parts--like the power supply and cooling fan--that might be useful at some later time. ;)

I hope you have a change of luck, Pistol. Sounds like you need it.
I had to replace my water heater a few mounths back. One thing on the plus side in my case, is that my w/h in located in my garage utility room.
Good luck my friend.

Them hot water heaters are a pain in the butt. There is an advertisment on tv where a plumber says "its not if, but WHEN" that sucker will leak.

A friend of mine has a mobile home and the hot water heater spring a leak and they didn't notice it for a month because those trailer water heaters are accessed from an outside door. It was a propane heater so basicly they extinguished and entire tank of propane gas... which is how they figured out how the water heater was leaking...the water went cold. And they had a rather large propane tank too... several thousand bucks to fuel it up.

We just replaced our hot water heater two weeks ago. I think obama has something to do with it. That's the only logical explanation I can come up with.

A plumber told me to replace them every 10 years. It only takes a few minutes.

Even new those things can cause headaches, mine is only a year old, the pressure relief valve blew and stayed running. Luckily, it is very close to a drain in the basement. A trip to the hardware store and 15 bucks later... all was well. And yes the relief valve was new too, don't know why it went.

Bad timing with the Hot Water heater and computer together.

When my hot water heater went, it was just one of the burners. So I had a luke warm water heater for a couple of days.

When I had it replaced, I was given two quotes. One was for a 6 year unit and for $45 more a 12 year unit.

I had to ask "Who wouldn't go for the 12 year for that little?", the answer "You would be surprised how many don't.".

The lovely Mrs SwanShot hold that there is a condition called appliantitis, rather like the flu. Once it strikes all you can do is let it run it's course, and hope it's no too bad. Last time it struck our house it took out a fridge and TV within a couple of days.
And yes, it always stikes when you can't afford it.:(:(
