Okay.

You get a matched set of single action revolvers chambered to .45 long Colt.

You load them each with five blank cartridges and leave the hammer on the empty cylinder . Ear plugs for you , ear plugs for your horsie

Then you gallop around and shoot at balloons or empty plastic milk jugs . There is enough stuff coming out of a blank to make holes in them

If you look closely you can see this horse has additional hearing protection - a pair of "ear socks" .

Thus we are prepared for the Iranian cavalry .

I'm sure the "horsie ears" make it more fun for them, too. Cool! :)

Yes. Oddly enough , as an animal that has managed to collectively survive as a species by running away from sudden movements or noises to avoid being eaten alive , some horses don't react well to having a Ruger Vaquero discharged with the barrel a foot away from their ears.

I have an old US Army manual that goes into great detail in the matter of training horses to ignore gunfire. Great photo of a fellow firing a 1911 'short colt' :) from horseback.

Wow, now if I could only ride a horse....

Just out of curiosity I just opened my copy of the US 'Small Arms Firing Manual 1913', and yes, on page 92 'Position and Aiming Drill Mounted'. I shall read this section with renewed interest. It even includes changing magazines, so the auto loader was in cavalry service.

If it surprises you I should have such a manual within reach, you dont know me well enough yet!!!

George Custer shot his own mount dead - his wife's favorite horse.

Apparently he didn't pay enough attention to Cooke's Calvary Manual .

Well, apparently G. Custer was never one for following the rules . . .
