View Full Version : How high will the unemployment rate go before people start rioting?

How high do you guys think the unemployment rate will go before the riots start?

My suspicion is that there will be sporatic "incidents" at 20% but they will not hit their stride until unemployment reaches 30%

I suspect martial law will go into effect shortly before 30% or slightly above.

And here is another question.... how high will the unemployment rate go before it threatens the viability of WalMart as a viable business?

How high before governmental collapse? I think if it hits 50% that it could actually happen...?

Correct, Delta. After that it fell slowly, plus or minus 1% per year, until the US began its rearmament programs in 1940-41.

You are so right, the Honey BBQ Chicken Strip Dinner from Whataburger is making me want to crawl under my desk for a nice long nap.

And that's the problem with this country, we are too busy to riot. We on the right have jobs and responsibility, unlike our liberal counterparts.

My kids, I don't think know how things get when the unemployed goes double digit. If hyper inflation sets in the money you have saved will be worthless/useless.

Very true, USMC. Our enemies, both American and British, have seen that over the years . . . much to their ultimate dismay. The Germans saw it during the Battle of Britain, the Argentines in the Falklands, the Japanese after Pearl Harbor, and Al-Qaeda in Afghanistan after 9/11.

I believe the unemployment rate is much higher than is being published. Here in Nevada they say about 11% are unemployed but it is based on claims which even with extensions can only last 39 weeks and this depression has been going on at least three times that long. I know many self employed people who are doing nothing and cannot collect any type of benefits. If I had to guess the unemployment in the private sector is well over 25%. In our little town alone (55,000) we have lost, Gottchaulks, Mervyns, Sizzler, Chiles, and Long John Silver not to mention many non chain privately owned commercial businesses. Sportsman's Warehouse came in, built the building and finished the inside and never opened. The county offered up a maintenance job and over 700 people showed up to apply. The crime rate here is so bad that the sheriff says he is 3 months behind starting investigations of burglary. We now see many car loads of gang bangers with California plates roaming the streets by day and you can guess what they do at night. California's economy is worse than ours and Sacramento is only two hours away. Our cops are not doing much about the gangs but rather they are writing tickets like crazy. A friend of mine got one for 37 in a 35 and when she went to court there was standing room only for like tickets. They actually set up phony construction zones so they can double the penalty. I just went through two of them yesterday and both had radar units working both ends.

The next shoe to drop in my opinion is going to be commercial real estate and I am afraid that is going to make the housing problem look like a little bump in the road. I don't think this administration has anymore of an idea on how to get us out of it than a big eyed bird. I would be very much surprised if America will survive this one. What I don't understand is why we are not marching on Washington (like they are in Iran) demanding a change and not the one we got. Demand that congress just go home or at the very least demand that they pass a law that all of them be gone in one year from Obama on down. In addition everyone that replaces them in order to be a candidate would have to have done something in there life other than having been an Acorn or any type of public servant and we all get to vote for them no matter where they come from so they are made to understand they represent all of America and not just their home state. What we need in my view are people who would be most like our founding fathers, people who had common sense and who knew the butt end of a rifle from the muzzle, unlike the career crooked politicians that have so cheerfully got us in the mess we are in. I will say one thing about Obama, he promised us change nd he has lived up to that promise by making it worse. I don't know if any of you saw the clip of his snide remark "and these people walking around shaking their little tee bags" such arrogance would not have been expected by a man who supposedly understood the US Constitution and how symbolic the tee bag really is. He just doesn't get it or he does get it and has a different and harmful agenda for us all and I am afraid for our country in either event.

Graehaven,

Nobody has been hiding that. There are various types of unemployment. It's one of the first things you learn in any macroeconomics classes. Basically, discouraged workers are not included in the official unemployment statistics as they aren't looking for work. They're essentially not part of the workforce. You can always track down that data and economists are not blind to it. Hit the library and pick up a book on Macroeconomics.

The intro economics stuff is pretty dry, but it's nice to have the theory. You can also google types of unemployment.

Yes, yes, yes....i know...Bush is responsible for the Betelgeuse star going super nova

W (I avoid saying Bush as there were two) doesn't get a free pass on anything. He was certainly happy to run deficits. In fact, for much of his administration the line was deficits were ok as long as the ratio of the deficits to GDP remained constant. He had control of all three branches for most of his presidency.

Call Obama on his policies, but do know that the banking failure and biggest recession since the Great Depression were inherited by him. His plans weren't radically different from what GWB did and what McCain was proposing.

There are plenty of politicians to be held accountable here, but it's not all Obama's fault and I hope what he's doing works out. Things are pretty bad in a lot of parts of this country.

Obama inherited what Pelosi and Reid did in congress, 2006, which was force lending institutions into lending money to people who couldn't pay it back. I'm in doubt if the people that caused this can see far enough to fix it. Obama is hand in hand with them any way you call it.

There is no way I'll believe McCain would have pushed anywhere near the amount of inflated progressive reform that Obama is and has. Sorry, that bucket won't hold water.

Biden has said in an interview that wealth redistribution is the agenda. He said you need to sacrifice more.

Sorry comrade but you've got it twisted.
