what does the p mean in 38 special +p

The "+P" mark indicates that a cartridge is loaded to higher pressure level than the original pressure level loading for the cartridge.

Obviously such ammo should not be used in most guns predating WW II, or cheap guns, or very lightly constructed guns (unless marked for +P ammo).

P means pressure=more gunpowder than standard is +P

There's also some +P+ ammo out there. Watch out for that stuff too.
