Rep. Issa Gives $445,000 for Davis Recall
The drive to recall California's Governor Grey Davis got a big financial
boost this week when Rep.Darrell Issa (R-CA) gave $345,000 to the committee
pushing the recall effort
The contribution raised the total amount Issa has given Rescue California,
the committee behind the recall drive, to a total of $445,000 - the
Congressman had previouisly put up $100,000 in seed money to get the movement off
the ground, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Records posted on the secretary of state's Web site show that Greene
Properties Inc. gave an initial $100,000 on May 8, and donated $345,000 this
week. Greene Properties is owned by Issa and his wife, Katharine, the Times
reported.
All told the committee has reported raising a total of $515,000, far short
of the $2 million political consultants told the Times it will cost to
gather the nearly 900,000 signatures of registered voters needed to place a
recall on the ballot.
Davis supporters told the Times they plan a counter-recall effort with the
probable target being Issa, who is said to be considering running for
governor if Davis is recalled.
"There is no doubt about it - this is all about Darrell Issa and his quest
for power," Davis spokesman Roger Salazar told the Times "Darrell Issa is
not interested in moving the state forward. He is interested in moving
Darrell Issa forward."
