[Nicer Version of my Pervious Rant]
Dear Friends,
I have noticed that many of the messages posted to this forum are Urban Legends. These types of posts do not accomplish the original intention of this forum, but only spread paranoia and slander of the involved parties which could ultimately lead to anger, bitterness, and possibly someone already on the edge to go off-the-cuff someday with their weapons.
I humbly request that those of you who post to this forum please research your articles and their sources before posting them. Carrying firearms is a very significant responsibility, and I only ask that you illustrate what responsible, mature citizens you are by being responsible in the correspondence you post.
Sincerely,
J

That's funny J, because your initial post read like the irresponsible and immature person you were warning us about! :D

Problem with the first post was too many people got offended thinking I was talking specifically about them =)

the problem is when the author starts out with "You all are ignorant" ... wouldn't you agree? ;)
jzdziarski
06-12-2003, 10:18 AM
And I thought there weren't supposed to be argumentative posts =)
The subject was "Urban Legends (You are all Ignorant)" and in my OPINION anyone who posts an urban legend - obviously not doing their due diligence prior to posting - is ignorant.
If there is any problem here it's censorship in a forum where things like the bill of rights are normally supposed to be important.

JZ, thank you for rephrasing your original message. :) I agree that it is frustrating when someone posts an urban legend without checking their sources. However, you have to understand that some people are not as web-savvy as others and perhaps don't really know how to go about checking the validity of a story. Also, we all have different beliefs and opinions on what is or is not fact. I may not agree with everything that is posted here. But as long as the post is within site guidelines, the poster is free to post it.... and if I don't agree with it, I am free to either ignore it, or to debate it with the poster, again staying within site guidelines.

We can be “argumentative” in posts here. An intelligent debate is always welcome. But when it degrades into nothing but mudslinging, name calling, and/or attacking the other persons character, that is not, and should not, be allowed. We have all graduated from junior high school. (I think)

Point is, if you're going to post "news" in a forum, you should first have the common sense to make sure it's newsworthy information and not an urban legend...bottom line..otherwise the forum turns into a lame, useless list of messages that may or may not be true...and it is an embarrassment to firearm owners everywhere that don't need any more bad press from people who would like to make us out to be paranoid morons.

NOW HOLD ON, HOLD ON, Take a deep breath and relax.
Who here is the authority(or want's to be) on what is and
is not newsworthy ?
Some will say that the funny section in the paper is newsworthy .
At times even an Urban Legend is newsworthy.
Some will make a mountain out of a molehill.
So let's relax, breathe deep, meditate. :)

An observation
These types of posts do not accomplish the original intention of this forum ...
J, I was'nt aware you were remotely involved with the intention of this or any forum @ TFF.

Not very much anymore...I used to be somewhat active in this forum, but quite frankly the whole site is pretty poor quality discussion compared to the other forums I hang out on (such as the AR-15 forum on ar15.com). A lot of censorship, too many newbies, and a lot of just plain old crap such as these lame urban legend posts.
I decided to revisit in hopes that something had changed, but obviously it's still the same old useless forum. I'm sure the people are nice and all, but I've got better things to do than waste any more time here.
Ciao.

jzdziarski, sorry if you feel that way about TFF. We try to keep this place a bit cleaner than other places. What you see as censorship, we see as keeping this place family-friendly and generally pleasant. I love a good debate just as much as the next guy, and I've been known to get argumentative. But personal attacks, profanity, etc., are out of bounds and I don't think that's asking too much. Those are the rules here.
On the subject of researching subjects before posting, I agree that people should not be blindly passing on rumors and legends as fact without making at least a modest attempt to see whether it's true or not. But honestly, if someone does post something that's an urban legend, someone is pretty quick to point it out. I don't see it as being a big problem.
And by the way, for those of you who use snopes.com to do that kind of research, he's not always correct. I was listening to the Rush Limbaugh show today, and Roger (who is filling in for Rush this week) was talking about something that snopes.com said was an urban legend. He did some research and found that it was true after all.
So, like Southern Moss says, it's not always black and white as to what "the facts" really are.

1952Sniper makes a good point. Snopes has been shown to not have a 100 percent success rate as far as determining what is and isn't an Urban Legend.
That being said, however, I still trust them more than some other, shall we say, questionable sources on the Net, to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.
It helps when the "news" source that one uses doesn't have a political axe of their own to grind, or have some sort of financial stake in what they report as "news".

So far you have used the words/ statements;
Ignorant, have no common sense, paranoid morons, (insinuated, irresponsible)
You say this site is lame, poor quality discussion, full of crap, and useless.
You complain about censorship in a privately owned site.
You also complain that there are newbies here.
(I am glad YOU started out knowing it all.)
With this attitude I am glad to hear that you
got better things to do than waste any more time here.
Don’t let your ISP hit you in the arz on the way out.
On Edit, just wanted to let you know that I agree with your original post. A "reasonable" effort SHOULD be made to validate any post. It is your degrading, name calling, attitude, that I can do without.

There are questionable sources on the net just like there are
questionable sources every where else.
More times than not the truth is contaminated with
impurities and it takes a lot of weeding to clear things up,
the whole world runs on deception and lies.

Everything we read must be perused with an eagle eye. While "snopes.com" may be inaccurate sometimes, overall it gives one more information thanpossessed before checking. It does serve a purpose, however, it is not my primary starting point.
I have found "truthorfiction.com" to be fairly accurate and well researched. You might want to check their site out.
As in everything else in life, we are surrounded by many things fraught with error, exaggeration, fiction, half-truths and rumor. That is human nature. No one is perfect but many strive to be as accurate as humanly possible. Unfortunately there has only been one perfect being, the rest being inherently flawed.
The Forum is supposed to be a place where people of common interests may have congenial chats, by way of posting, gather useful information and sharing common experiences. I was never aware that it was supposed to be another form of a polygraph test, which itself can be quite flawed.

Amazing how you can come to this conclusion after 13 posts. I made afew on the old site and a couple here on the new and improved site. and I agree with sniper1952What you see as censorship, we see as keeping this place family-friendly and generally pleasant. I love a good debate just as much as the next guy, and I've been known to get argumentative. But personal attacks, profanity, etc., are out of bounds and I don't think that's asking too much.
This is why I chose to be apart of this site. If work didn't take up so much of my time I'd be here alot more than I am now.

I often think of you guys, wondering what the hot topic is. go away for a spell and look what I stepped in:p

To each his own, I guess.
I've been involved with lots of different forums, and the reason I stuck with this one was because of the maturity and respect here. It seems that the forums that jzdziarski likes are the ones I shy away from. The ones where every thread results in name calling, flaming, profane personal attacks, childish bickering, etc. That kind of childish behavior doesn't last long on this forum, and we can thank Tac and his band of merry moderators for that.
This place is a cut above the rest and I, for one, like it that way.
Again, jzdziarski, we always welcome your thoughts. You are free to discuss (almost) any topic here, as long as you can be civil and adult about it. I hope you choose to stick around and contribute.
