Hi guys! I'm trying to identify a barrel I bought at an estate sale. I believe it's in the 40 caliber range & has strange proof marks I've never seen before. It also has a sliding rear sight that goes from 4-20 I'll try to take decent pics with this phone but can't promise anything. All help is appreciated. [
It doesn't look bad at all, just not sure it comes off... Looks pretty well permanently attached to the bbl.
still not 100% sure about it being a Mauser, anybody else want to chime in on maker??
Just compared the sight in your photo to the Mauser Gew 98 sitting in the rack behind me. Your sight is identical. That said, I've seen repro sights and sight components for sale on line over the past couple of years, which would suggest there's a market for originals. Sorry to say I can't help you on price, but if you go prowling on line for a Gew 98 Lange-Visier sight you'll probably find one. Numrich is currently listing repro Gew 98 Lange-Visier rear sight assemblies for $46.30.
The Gew 98 was an 8x57mm, and your sight is a post 1905 configuration for the .323" bore diameter S-Patrone cartridge, so if the bore on your barrel works out at .40 caliber I'd say it's either really worn, or the muzzle's been counter-bored to freshen up accuracy.
Put it on eBay last week and got $91 for it! Not a bad appreciation for a $4 purchase!
