There are several muzzle brakes for the Mosin to choose from. From what I have read, some are junk and ineffective. It seems in the case you get what you pay for. But there are a few $65-$85 range that might be good but I don't know.

re: The expelling of venting gasses and specks of debris out to the sides...is there any risk to any one to my right or left on a firing range where neighbors are basically a couple feet behind off to the sides?

Which one has been effective for you?

I got this one from Texas Presision for about $65. It attaches just like the boyonet plus two set screws. It does lighten the recoil. I'm not sure about the guys on either side of me but they didnt complain. Probably cause I was letting them shoot it. We went through 80 rounds. Looks bad

As far as recoil dampening is percieved.... hard for me to tell. As you can see I added the Archangel stock which has a great butt pad. That alone takes all the hurt out of shooting the mosin with that hard as steel, steel buttstock. When mine was stock I would only shoot it maybe 12 rounds which was plenty to tenderize my shoulder, now I shoot 40-60-80 rounds with no problem (until I go through 40 45/70's out of the Marlin 1895 SBL)
Now that I added the muzzle break, it does indeed feel like a softer kick and I dont get any muzzle rise. I like it.
