The Cattaraugus 225Q. It is a very interesting knife that is known as the "Quartermaster's Knife" in WW-2. It was originally designed for the Quartermaster, hence the designation 225-Q (Q for Quartermaster). It has a very heavy bright 6" blade with an overall length of 10 3/8". It was originally designed for opening crates and handling other tough jobs. The handle is comprised of heavy leather washers that are not usually smooth, but rather have a rough finish apparently to allow for strong, non-slip griping. The pommel is fashioned after a hammer for sealing boxes.
Also known as the "COMMANDO" it apparently found much favor with the fighting forces.
Here are two examples. One in VG original condition. One which I picked up this weekend at a sale is pretty worn. IMO it's lost it's collector interest so I'm going to make a small project of it. Reconfigure the blade tip to that of more of a Bowie type. Clean up the handles a bit. I'll post after pics later.

Glad you posted. I had decided not to for apparent lack of interest. I didn't do much to it. I ground the top tip of blade to a bit more of a swept configuation and added a false double edge (Top edge pointed but not sharpened. Like on USMC KA BAR). And smoothed the handle and worked in some mink oil. About 20 minutes work. But IMO it makes a great, very strong hunting knife. The 1095 steel won't take as aggressive an edge as some modern knives. But it will hold the edge you get on it through a lot of abuse. Thanks for posting.
