Need some honest opinions please. I went into my LGS on Saturday looking for a Colt Combat Commander and ended up walking out with a Ruger SR1911. In an overall comparison between the two, will the SR1911 be O.K. for all around service? All I have done so far is a thorough disassembled cleaning and I have replaced the factory signature grips with smooth cocobolo, my old hands don't like the rough checkering. A lot going on yesterday so did not get to the range but will make it next Saturday. I am sure it will perform fine. I just did not want to wait for the Colt and the SR1911 caught my eye. Any opinions here will be greatly appreciated.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the Ruger. I bought one a few months ago, and even though I don't have but a few hundred rounds through it, it shoots great and is becoming my favorite 1911.

I just got back from a trip to Florida to visit family. I took the SR1911 and my Sig 1911 with me. I got a chance to go to a private range while I was there and I let some people shoot both of them. They all wanted to shoot the Ruger more than the Sig.

You should be ok with the Ruger. I carry their CMD, or commander sized model that I bobtailed myself and added VZ Recon grips. It's my favorite 1911 that I trust my life to every day.

I've got a little over 1500 rounds down range without any malfunctions. Well, just a few. I handload and cast my own projectiles and had to experiment with seating depth on a new projectile. They malfunctioned until I got it right but no malfunctions that was the firearms fault.

I don't think you will ever regret getting the Ruger. I have had mine for close to three years and there have been many rounds through it including some soft 200gr. swc target loads along with regular 230gr. fmj. I just handles everything. What you need to do now is have Woodnut make you a set of personalized grips.

Thanks for the encouragement, I have confidence in the Ruger, it just needs to be tested. Any other "Tweeking" will be minor and after my trip to the range. Then maybe a set of nice grips from Carl. I have two sets from him and will be getting some more. Photo attached,

Thanks everyone for your opinions, personally I love all 1911's, I think I will still get that Colt.
Range report: I took the Ruger out on Saturday to my gun club range and fired 250 rounds of various loads starting at 7 yards to get on paper. No real need for that, it was just to the right of center inside a 1" circle. Moved out to 25 yards and commenced to shoot the center out of the 25 yard bullseye target. Slide was a little rough but no FTF or eject. Has a consistent 6 1/2 lb. trigger pull with a slight take up and no over travel. All in all, the pistol shot great. I will now take it apart and smooth out all the rough spots. Then it will be time to clean it up and get ready for the next trip to the range. Turns out the Ruger is money well spent.

If you didnt tear it down and clean it prior to shooting it, I can see why the slide might be rough...

First thing I did when I got it home from the gun shop was tear it down, give it a good cleaning and inspection. Then I put it back together with a light coat of oil knowing I would be taking it to the range soon. I wanted to see how well it would shoot without touching it with a stone. Now I have a base starting point to compare. I like working on my pistols and have fun making them perform as well as possible.
I was first introduced to the 1911 in 1966. It was called Infantry Training at USMCB Camp Pendleton. I later became an armorer for a Training Unit and never got it out of my system.

Double D,
I took your advise and waited. My LGS called this morning and told me they had just got a new supply of Colt's in and invited me to come take a look. So,,,I went down there at lunch time and walked away with the Colt I was looking for the last time. I now have 9 total of various sizes and calibers. From my 1973 vintage Series '70 to this new Commander. My two custom builds are graced with beautiful grips that Carl made for me and it is time for a couple more of his master pieces. I am anxious to compare the reliabilty and performance between the Colt and the Ruger, it is going to be fun.

I am now the proud owner of both.
I also have a Sig, a Custom built on Briley parts, a Custom built on Caspian parts, a Springfield Armory V-10 Champion, and my trusty Series "70 that I bought new in 1978. I do love those 1911's.

I have 5-6 colts and one of them is my Wiley Clapp commander. It has worked its way into my every day carry and I love the way it shoots. I paid more than I probably should but I love this gun!

My EDC has been the SA Champion for about 5 years now but I am ready for something different. I use Tucker leather for both inside and outside WB carry. I just like the feel of leather.
My "Custom Builds" are still in the break-in stage but have proven to be reliable so far. I am about half way through my self imposed standard of consistency before I use either for everyday carry.
I have cleaned and oiled the new Colt and will be taking it to the range on Saturday. Looking forward to shooting a new Colt for the first time in many years.

I'm lucky and blessed where I can add to my firearms fund each month. I never buy on credit. I've bought 3 guns this year, and lots of reloaded equipment and components. My plan needs to be let my FA fund build up a little. Don't think family and friends are going to buy into "its for a good cause". Even my wife who has a few of her own guns thinks "how many guns do you need". But actually she is quite supportive and understands. I need to be patient which I'm not. :(

I am blessed to have a wife who shares my view on firearms and ammo. She owns several guns herself and doesnt care how many I own as long as the money is there. My count is somewhere in the 50s now and still need more. She always checks the ammo shelf at walmart for me (and I am an FFL) so she knows there is no such thing as too much ammo and trust me, I have a few rounds...:) I know your one 1911 will multiply soon, its inevitable.

Me; I should have been born rich, instead of so good looking!

Todd, when are you going to ship me those colts?? Im waiting....

Dan, I have thinned the heard a little this summer letting go of some S&W's but that was because I want to get a S&W 586 or 686 revolver in six inches and a .22lr bolt rifle if the ammo ever comes back. But got to hang on to some of them, ha.

I actually really want the SR1911. I have been a long time fan of Ruger guns and I NEED a Ruger 1911.

Nice buy!

Thanks everyone, it is nice to find a group of gun guys who know how to be nice and helpful at the same time. I can now say my collection has a good start ( seven 1911's and counting). Being able to have a choice when you go to the range makes going to the range more enjoyable. Having more than a couple 1911's gives you an excuse to go most weekends. The wife don't mind me going because most of the time I take her with me. I probably won't ever have as many as Dan but it is going to be fun being in the same game.
