What is this (antique rifle)?

Obtained an old rifle and all I can establish so far is what it isn't. It isn't a breach loader. Any help would be appreciated. Would be nice to know the value, too, but more importantly it would be nice to know what it is.

No markings anywhere on it; they must have worn off. The plate on the stock is gone as well. Guessing by looks it's late 19th century/civil-war era. See photos below.

Anyone?

not much value there..its a wall hanger..stock is cracked and repair attempted..signs of dry rot also, so dont guess it would stand up to many shots anyways...you would have to determine the bore diamiter to even come close to cakiber I would guess.

I am just guessing on this since I am not a professional..others with MORE knowlege will shortly be along and correct me if I am too far off base.

My Father bought and gave me a rear portion of a Lorentz. My specimen is marked 862 on the lock and QJA in the barrel under the wood . This rifles appears to be a .54 caliber. As I recall these rifles came in many styles depending on use. Years ago, I was in a Cracker Barrel restaurant where among the other antiques was a Lorentz with elaborate rear sight and cheek piece-a Jaeger style military rifle. Mine and the one in the pictures appear to be a garden variety infantry rifle musket.

OK, see attached.

ALSO, the last of these shows a marking that's clearly a "3" (less clearly in this photo, due to resolution/size limitations on here and my poor photo-taking abilities). The last few show places where there may have been a marking that has worn off.

I think you nailed it but looks like somebody sanded the cheek piece off. If it is a Lorenz there should be a two digit number on the lock in front of the hammer. That will be the last two digits in the date of manufacture.
Interesting. Thanks for the info! Unfortunately, there are no markings there. (Or anywhere on it.) I went over it closely. There may well have been markings before, but they have worn off.

With the tip re: the Lorentz, I found this, which looks extremely similar to the one pictured above, except the markings are worn off and the side of the butt plate is slightly different (you can see it had an emblem or something of some kind that's removed on the one I have): http://www.gunauction.com/buy/12705...austrian-m1854-lorenz-musket-rifle-marked-.ff

But even the end of the butt plate and screws look identical. It's extremely similar--gives me a lot of confidence that roundball and other commenters got it--or are at least extremely close. Going to take more pics tonight.
