I am trying to get the approximate value of a P 38 serial # a 1717 (matching), cvq, all black slightly worn edges, has a small symbol stamped over trigger … looks like 88 with wings over. Has worn holster, only one clip, has documentation of the soldier legally bringing it to U.S..
Thank you.
As GVW3 said, asking "how much is it worth?" is like saying you've got a '63 Chevy and how much is it worth.....
Pictures are a MUST. Secondly, matching serial numbers as you stated is a big help. Another thing to consider on something like a Luger or a P38 is the magazene - those were also issued with the pistol and stamped with a serial number, as well as the holster in some cases.
As you may already know, your's appears to be a Spreewerk - Berlin. Walther, Mauser and Spreewerk all made the P38, and collectors seem to prefer them in just that order. No matter who made them, matching serial numbers on the gun, mag and holster all increase the value. Walther mader P38s are easier to identify for year of make because they are stamped "AC42", 'AC43" etc. Mauser made P38s are stamped "byf 42" thru "byf45" to January 1945, then "svw" to the end of the war. Spreewerk did not do this, but they were made from March 1941 to 1945
