Looking for a leftie revolver!

I was looking at a Charter Arms catalog today reading about their Bulldog 44sp revolver when something pretty cool caught my eye. Seems that they make a revolver for lefties called the "Southpaw", meaning the cylinder opens to the right side instead of the left. The only problem is that it is a 38sp and I want a 44sp.

Does anyone know of any other company making a short barrel left handed revolver, particularly in 44sp or even 44mag.

Several pistol manufacturers have gotten on board with the ambidextrous safety and even Stag, the maker of my AR-15 offers a left handed version, meaning the cases eject out the left side rather than the right.

Just curious to see if anything is out there.

Thanks

You know, the Colt Single Action Army and its clones are left handed guns. Loading and unloading them is most easily done holding the gun by the grips with the left hand while operating the loading gate and ejector rod with the right hand. As a right hander I have to reach over my right hand, which is holding the gun by the grip, with the left hand to load and unload the gun.

A revolver is never fast to reload, thus the need for an auto loader. I've tried speed loaders with my Bull Dog, and I now use speed strips, they are easier to carry, they don't break, and they are almost as fast to use. When reloading after shooting a few rounds, speed strips become the cat's meow. You can't do that with a speed loader with out dumping good rounds. And I always use both hands to reload my revolvers!

I've heard that "Colts are left-handed" theory, many times. But who the hell holds the gun by the grip when loading or unloading?

I hold the GUN - the receiver and cylinder - in my left hand. That allows me to use my left thumb and forefinger to rotate the cylinder, which is an extremely important part of loading and unloading a single action. I hold the BIG gun, and manipulate the BIG cylinder, with my less-dexterous left hand, while manipulating the SMALL ejector rod and the SMALL cartridges with my more-dexterous right hand. The gun was designed that way, originally, for manipulating the TINY percussion caps with your more-dexterous right hand.

Left-handed - phooey.

I've never bought into that "Colt is a left handed gun" thing either.

The proper way to hold the old cap & ball or the Single Action Army style revolvers is with the left hand around the frame and cylinder. The left hand rotated the cylinder, and the right hand, the one with the fine motor skills, would either place the caps on the nipples or insert the cartridges. ...so with all logic and reasoning - the Colt cap & ball and SAA revolvers were designed for right-handed people(the vast majority of folks).

As for the OP's question - the Charter Southpaw is about all there is unless you want to use a top-break. Pretty much each and every topbreak was ambidextrous.

"fine motor skills". :) I like that phrase better than "more dexterous/less dexterous".

As do I...but then again, I'm a lefty too. The loading gate on the right side of the frame is my favorite feature about Colt pattern single-actions. :)
I hold it by the grip and index the cylinder with my trigger finger as I feed the shells through the gate with my uncoordinated useless hand (the right).

I could try to describe how I load/reload the typical swing-out cylinder DA revolver but it sounds really dumb unless you see it in person. The three paragraphs would take 1000 times longer to type than the actual reload does. I can reload one just as fast the average righty shooter can even with all the juggling. I agree with LD. Everyone works out their own system.

Show Low,
Good to hear that Charter has what you're looking for in the works!

Well, maybe there is hope after all! After reading about the Southpaw I dropped Charter Arms an email asking if they had any plans on a 44 sp Southpaw and I just got a reply from Nick Ecker, the head honcho........

"Dear George,
Thank you for your interest in our Southpaw, the inspiration was my youngest
daughter who is left handed. We are planning a .44 Southpaw later next year."
Sincerely,
Nick

I guess I can wait for this one!
