Paranoid, Crazy or just Good Sense?

So I'm wondering if I should stop buying .22LR? I know to some this may seem like a stupid question, if not to most of you, but I'll throw this out there anyway. Maybe if I explain my circumstance you'll understand. My kids and I love to shoot however 98% of the time it's NOT rimfire. While I have seven .22 guns I bet we haven't shot 200 rounds in a year. Like all of us, I spend a lot of time in gun shops, just poking around to see what's new. While there, if I see .22's I'll buy a couple of boxes because that seems to be what we are all doing. Up to two weeks ago I had massed over 3,000 rounds and started to think I should consider calling it quits. After all, at my current rate of consumption I have a 15 year supply. Then wouldn't you know it, last week a shop had 10 bricks so I of course picked one up. Then a second shop I visited later in the week had the same. There goes another brick in my pile. Now today I was at Big 5 of all places and they had 10+ bricks on their shelf so I picked up another two. I finally took an inventory and found I have 1,000 Stingers, 2,500 Remington Golden Bullets, 2,000 Winchesters and another 1,000 of miscellaneous descent. Not to mention the 750 .22 shorts on my shelf. I have a Henry that eats those just fine. So if my math is correct that is 7,250 rounds and at 200 a year that should last me over 36 years.

Well there you have it. Do I keep adding to my stash or call enough enough? I guess that's the dilemma we're all facing right now. Who knows what the future holds when it comes to our ammo supply. I'm sure I'll just keep adding when the opportunity presents itself until I need to build a new shop.

Happy Shooting!

Paranoid? Not at all. We don't envisage a SHTF scenario here in Sitka that'd necessitate our bugging out, but if it ever came to that the two firearms that'd make the trip with us are both .22s - a S&W Model 18 and Henry lever action. Each will digest everything from very quiet BB/CB caps to HV solids and hollow points, and if need be you can carry a lot of .22 ammo. Wasn't too long ago you couldn't find .22 rounds anywhere, so stocking up as a hedge against future events makes a lot of sense to me.

It makes sense to me to get what you can. I have eleven guns that shoot .22 (either LR or Mag). I probably hadn't fired a .22 for 10 or 12 years, but I had the guns and probably 1500 rounds of ammo. When I got my suppressor, I had some of them threaded and I started shooting all them again. Every time I go to the range, I take at least one of them with me and it doesn't have to be a threaded one.

Every time I find any .22LR ammo, I buy it. I probably have less than 100 rounds of .22 Magnum and I just don't buy any of that. The two Magnum shooting .22s I have are both derringers and I just don't shoot them very much.

If you shoot bullseye and live where you can practice 50 weeks a year and use 100 rounds for practice, you need a case of ammo. Add in six 2700 matches, Camp Perry, 20 weeks of pistol league, and a few other matches and that's another 2500 rounds. Having two cases on hand and two cases on order seems reasonable, not paranoid.

Stock up now! When Hillerybeast becomes president, you'll be glad you did!

I guess that's why they make 33 flavor's of ice cream. I'll not be held captive by the whims of the market place. Variety is the spice of life. Just found a sale on 7.62 X 39 with no limit. I don't need no stinkin' .22lr!

I love the 7.62X39, but it's ruff on squirrels, rabbits, and birds! It just don't leave much to eat!:D

Believe it or not, but all my neighbors hunt pigs around here. They also trap them. I have yet to see a single pig on my property, or just over the fence line. And you are correct the 7.62X39 is an excellent round for pigs, or deer.

I'm going to say buy..buy..buy.
I just read an article talking about California's new ban on traditional ( lead ) ammo. The article said, in part:

Non-lead ammunition is not available for about half of hunting calibers, and the report found the California ban will cause severe shortages nationwide.

They are going to get their ammo somewhere, probably in the mail. IMO, the retailers will take full advantage of their shortages by hiking ammo prices up everywhere.

Only you can answer this. I ran almost out of 22lr two years ago. Since then if I see it at a good price I buy. Not a lot but I don't pass up a good deal on it. I now have around 9000 rounds. I don't ever want to run out again. I do shoot a lot of it at times.

Not everyone has huge ammo needs...Wow, did I say that?? LOL

I do suggest that folks get a .22lr/wmr reloading kit...
which basically quadruples your stock, as long as you police your brass ;)

Keep buying! You just might need them.

Our dollar is being de-valued at an alarming rate.A good deal for 500 rounds is now around $23.99.I remember a 500 round brick being $6.99 when I was around 12 years old.I think there's a possibility of a brick being $70 or $ 90 as a normal price in the next 5 years.I say get some extra while you can still afford it and save some.

$27.50 is about as high as I'll go for a brick, maybe $30, that's 5 cents to 6 cents a bullet! I can buy large game hunting ammo for $.25 a bullet

I still buy it when I see it at a good price. usually gander mt sells it for 25.00 a brick. my wife and I both pick one up. Right now I have about 4500 rounds on hand. I'll be shooting a little less .22 now that hunting season is getting close, and more deer caliber stuff. Oh yea here in NY they have put a stop to us shooting hogs. DEC says it hampers their efforts in trying to get rid of them. They say hunters may kill a few but the rest of them spilt up run off, and are hard to trap or shoot.

They are lying to ya! Of course, you already knew that!

I'd just like to see some!

As my 22 shooting is spent on clay birds, tin cans and ground squirrels should they show their faces I kinda get whatever. I have 4 bricks of Remington Golden bullets and 4 bricks of Winchesters. About 1000 CCI stingers and an entire large ammo case filled with miscellaneous 50 and 100 round boxes of what I come across in my travels. Although I just added another .22, that being a a Winchester Model 06 so I may start shooting them a bit more.

I have 25,000 rounds. I was shooting for 40k when my "source" dried up. Only you can determine when enough is enough. Depends on your finances and your desire. Your future needs may be hard to predict. It can always be resold. I wouldn't go into debt to buy it, but there are worse things to spend your money on.
