Need a recommendation

I'm thinking of getting back into trap shooting. Can I get a recommendation for a single shot 12 ga. I went to a gun club with a friend as his guest and was shocked to see shotguns costing between 6 - 8 thousand dollars. 20 yrs ago, the last time I shot trap, I did pretty well with a Rem. 870 & 1100. Can I get anything in the 1000/1500 dollar range? Or do I need to mortgage the farm to get back into it.

I have no qualms about a cheaper gun if it'll do the job. I'd just like to know what the differences are & how they could affect my shooting. I can buy a lot of other toys for the difference between an 870 & an $8K gun even if it means one less bird per round.

To start with the 870 is not a single shot shotgun.:D A 12 gauge shot gun with an open, or improved cylinder choke, will shoot the same pattern no matter if it's a single shot, a pump, a semi-auto, or if it costs 10K, or $75. For shooting sporting clays, or skeet, you need extra ammo on board for the doubles! I have a $75 12 gauge shotgun that will shoot trap all day long!

I can't tell you the difference, because I never owned or shot a 8k gun, but I just shoot clays with the same guns I hunt with, 20ga browning o/u, sweet 16 A-5, and rem 1100 12ga. True I will never be a world record clay shooter, but hopefully the practice has led to more real downed birds.

Savage makes a nice over/under 12 gauge shotgun for $639. It's the model 444
Product Gun Orange Line Amber

A dedicated trap gun is just for "snob appeal". I never could afford the toys to keep up with the other guys so I shoot trap and skeet with whatever I want to shoot, use a 50 year old model 12 duck gun with a full choke if you want; it shoots the same as any other full choke shotgun.
In the end whatever is comfortable for you to shoot is the best gun, for trap you want a tight choke and a good fit, it will get you good scores. I found that if I could hit with the model 12 it really did help my hunting.
I am with Joe (above post) as I have shot my 16 ga. sweet 16 for skeet and trap; not the best scores of the day, but the most style.

i do trap with a 'cheap' O/U i bought maybee 17 ys ago. I think it is what is being sold as an mp300 baikal now.. but i think the importer back then was something like sarsilmaz or something like that.

it is plain.. but shoots and ejects fine. If I do my part.. it does it's part. way back then it was a 400-500$ shotgun if I recall correctly.
