what's the deal with '1911 guys' when you pull out a systema or molina?

was out shooting earlier and the glock crowd had the far end of the range. all black tight tshirts and tactical pants and such..

in the middle was evidentally a 1911 crowd.. there was a small buffer lane between the glocksters and the 1911mongers. I setup there as there were some families using the upper end of the range. the glocksters seemingle paid no attention to anyone other than their group. the 1911 crowd found time however to walk over and look at my colt systema and ballester molinas and endlesly criticise me and them .. i switched over to a 38/200 enfield and then a tt33 and finally a nagant using both the 762 cyl and the conversion acp cyl.

what's the deal with the intolerance among cliques?

just curious.

I like most things that turn chemical reactions into noise, smoke and holes in paper down range. i don't like the look of most glocks or high points.. but i'd take one over a rock during an apocalypse. ;)

is it an age issue? as in gun age? I think my guns.. and maybee mee.. were older than most other people there. :) my nagant revolver certaintly ws the oldest thing there.. :)

I think you pegged me 100% wrong. I carted in those old guns to have fun shooting history.( those are likely some of the cheapest/ least valuable oldies in my collection to boot ) I am not one that goes to a range to stand and scrutinize others toys, though if I see something neat I will probably watch it send lead downrange a bit. If I wanted attention I'd likely cart in a bunch of nfa guns, or a couple arm loads of my "big five" safari rifles., if i was looking to destroy targets anyway.

Most of mine were made in government arsenals. None of them look as fancy as a new expensive gun, but some of them have been shooting for 100 years and have another hundred left in them. I don't think that you can find a brand-new rifle at any price that has a bolt as well-crafted as my Swedish Mauser, or would be more durable than my Mosin-Nagant, more reliable than my SKS, etc.

If someone is chuckling at one of my surplus rifles or Taurus revolvers or good clones, they are just displaying their own ignorance and I am a little embarrassed for them.

Tallball, I like your last paragraph.I too have seen the elitist swat and sniper wannabees at ranges.I don't remember people at the range acting the way they do now 20 years ago. They're one reason I very rarely go to a public range. And show low,you said in your post "don't take this the wrong way".There's only one way to take your post. You're wrongfully calling a highly respected member a braggart.

This whole thread is kinda funny. I have several 1911's but I am not a "1911 guy". I have several AR's but I am not one of the "tacti-cool crowd". When I go to the range, I take what I want to shoot, and don't give a rats butt what someone else thinks. If I see someone shooting something interesting, I will walk down and look at it and if I don't know what it is, I will ask. I have never and will never make any kind of derogatory comment to anyone about anything shooting related. We all get to choose our own toys and we are all different.

Exactly. It's the attitude that defines the issue, not the firearm.

IE. "1911 guys" are not jerks because they own 1911's It's the few jerks that own 1911's that get the term '1911 guys' etc. ;)

Most of my guns are cheap, it's what I can afford. I sure hope no one ever gets offended by what I bring! I only have 1 1911A1, and it started life as a Norinco.

I guess I'll never understand the Glock hostility. I started shooting in the 60's. My first gun was an old S&W lemon squeezer in .38S&W. My first semi was a High-Standard .22lr. My brother sent home a military 1911 from Korea. I've had hundreds of hand guns since, mostly revolvers because I never shot a semi that didn't have issues. When I began carrying, it was a revolver. As I got older & less confident of my shot placement I spent yrs. searching for a reliable semi with a higher rnd. count. I've had a few that came real close to ideal. Then a few yrs. ago I bought my first Glock. I won't comment about its looks. I'll just say that my gun safe is loaded with safe queens. Guns that I consider too beautiful or too valuable to EDC. I trust my Glocks because I have no reason not to. If that makes me a Glock snob, so be it! I respect everyone's right to shoot what they like but I've lived more than 70 yrs. & it's a hard habit to break. I shoot my Glocks often & carry them as EDC's. I buy tools at Harbor Freight because I've been retired for more than sixteen yrs. & I no longer have to rely on my tools to make a living. I carry a Glock because I intend to keep on living!

It's not that owning a glock makes you a snob.. it's when a snob owns a glock that you get a glock snob.

remember. it's the attitude, not the gun that defines.

We don't go out to the range to impress the gun snobs or anyone else. We go to the range to put holes in paper in as small an area as possible, and to enjoy ourselves, to have fun.

I have what I have, and I enjoy using it, whether it's guns, cars, house, or whatever. It does what I want it to do. I've thought through why I want something, what I want it for, and what I want it to do, and shop until I find the thing at the right price. What others think doesn't really come into the equation. I guess I'm content with what I have and don't really care about what others think about it.

I couldn't agree with you more. I have my 1911s ( all Colt ) and enjoy them a lot.
I've been talking about getting a couple of the new Norinco 1911s that have just come out. These are the ones that are stamped with 1911A1 and a ser. number. And nothing else , meaning no Mfg. name stamped on the gun. I can't believe all the 1911 owners giving me the gears about not getting a high priced 1911. The new Norincos are only $299.

Normally the prices for firearms in Canada higher than in the US.
However anything that comes from China or the former USSR are usually dirt cheap.
EI. new Russian SKS $199.
new Norinco sks $225.
new Norinco 1911 and 1911A1 $299. with hard case and $30 cleaning kit. (all models )
Mint shape Nagant $159
Swiss military rifles $299

These prices are about 5 minnuts old from my suplyers.

Now if I was to buy a Colt or Glock or Rem or Win I would expect to pay what you do plus 20 to 30 percent more. So in the long run it kinda works out.

I wonder where that leaves me....... I have Glocks, high-end 1911's (Kimbers), cheap-arse 1911's, AR's, and a BUNCH of other stuff too, but I DON'T have a tactical vest, a skin-tight black T-shirt, cargo pants or combat boots. Hmmmmmm, NOW what am I supposed to do ??

Go to the range and enjoy your guns. :D

The way that I see it, range attendees belong to a great fraternity. I am happy to shoot what I have, and if you seem interested, you can try it out. I was at an indoor range once, and the guy next to me had a Desert Eagle in .44 mag. Wow! Thjat thing was awesome. When he finished the mag off, I asked him about it. Got to fire it a few times. Nice! Stainless and gold. I have met some nice folks, and some that look like they would shoot at you for looking at them. I was 75 feet from one guy who got mad that I was trying to see what he was shooting.

I'm just throwing out this idea to see whether others have noticed it. I seldom go to any gun range any more, but in VA and in east TN growing up, courtesy and friendly attitude was the norm and rudeness or quarrels was unusual. It seems to me that television shows in particular (including news panel analysis on FOX) have moved toward promoting talking over one another and heavy use of sarcasm. Both are indicators of a person who is insecure and somewhat angry. To me, it seems that is spilling over (and perhaps reflecting) frustration among people since the 1990s. And I do notice that politically liberal people seem to be the worst offenders in that regard.

If all the news folks did was sit in front of the camera, and read off the day's new, nobody would watch it. Distention rules. ""Screw the news, entertain me, NOW"".
I heard a remark a few days ago, that threw me for a loop. Some jerk said words to the effect...all future presidents will have to be as entertaining, and overtly friendly, as bHo, or they'll never get elected. How's that for qualifications? al franken for president, anyone?

Most shooters like that are into the better guns so they think. I get that all the time with the surplus military rifles. The guys shooting there ar's see my Russian ak/akm and say nothing. It's the same thing with our handguns too I'm a second class citizen because I don't shoot what they have. I have modern stuff to but I'm having fun with the older guns too.

I find you can shut up the in crowd pretty fast by a good group on your target. At my age I am still a pretty good shot with a pistol. One time at the range I was doing real well with my Beretta 92. Blowing the black out of the bullseye. My son later told me the other people at the range commented on how well I was shooting. It was a good day. I don't always shoot that well.

I really don't care what other people think about me. I think they should be concerned what I think of them. Thats an advantage of old age.

United we stand...

Our society is completely self-absorbed, even at some ranges it seems. The club I belong to doesn't seem too bad but there's a little of it. I'm interested in guns and shooting. There's lots of stuff I don't personally want but that's just taste and opinion, and I don't want to badmouth anyone's preferences in guns except in jest.
