I got back my 7 mm rum today, it has a custom muzzle break and an accurizing package. It shoot okay at 50 yards, about 1 1/2 group around the bulls eye but at 100 yards it seemed to be all over the place. I am hand loading and is using 89.5 grains of reloader 22 and 140 spitzer tips. Do you think the load is to hot and the bullet is just spinning out of control? Any recommendations would be great? thanks
What does your manual state as min and max loads? Have done a work up or just grab a number out of the book. And in my opinion, 50 yards isn't going to tell you much with that caliber.
I want to stick with 140 grain tips and the groups were good at 50 yards but at 100 yards I couldn't get a group better than about 4 inches, with that caliber and setup I should be getting 1 to 2 inch groups at 100 yards? Does anyone know if that is a hot load based on my post, I don't have the manual for reloading 22 powder.
That is very near the maximum charge, according to Hornady #9! The absolute maximum for a 139 gr bullet is 90.4 gr of Reloder 22, and you are slightly heavier than that, dictating a lower charge. The book also mentions that this is an inefficient round, and will wear out barrels at the higher velocities if used for target practice. I'd definitely back off on that load to about 75 gr, then slowly work my way up in 1/2 gr increments to find the most accurate load for your gun.
Ok thanks I thought it was pretty hot due to the sound of the 10 shots I made. Do you have any idea where you think it will be? I was thinking around 80-83 grains with my 140 grain spitters.
It would take a long time and a lot of bullets to start at 75 grains
Every gun is different, and behaves differently at various velocities and various bullet profiles. You can only find out what works best for your gun and your bullet by going through the effort of ladder testing. Check out the Reloading forum for some really excellent articles about finding the best load for your weapon. You'll find them at the top of the forum, being sticky posts, so you don't have to search for them. Have fun! And btw - none of my guns perform best at the top of the range, and the peak performance point is usually really obvious. Group sizes will get smaller and smaller as you increase the powder charge from the minimum, then once past that optimal point the accuracy will drop like a stone.
Be patient, as it will take time. But if you follow the instructions in the Ladder testing articles, you won't waste a lot of ammo finding the sweet spot for your gun.
