This gun has been shot little and is in terrific shape. Everything is original far as I can tell. The SN is 3278826 which I understand puts the manufacture date in Nov 1942. I believe the Weaver scope is, or almost is, as old as the gun. Going to be selling it and would sure like to know what I can get out of it. Hoping someone in the know can help. Thanks!

"Sporterizing" '03 Springfields was popular 50+ years ago. I thought the look was wrong then, and still do, but owners can do what they wish with their guns.

Original '03s are readily available at gun shows. I had a nice one (but it had a low serial number) with original sling and cleaning kit that I sold for about $350 at auction about five years ago. I had bought it originally in the late 1950s for, I think, $50 from Ye Olde Hunter.

I agree with most of the responses. The 'collector' value is gone - and now the value is based on a 'sporterized Springfield'. I happen to really like Springfield 03/03A3 rifles. Some of the 03A3s were made with 2 groove barrels, and while useful as a military rifle, the 4 groove barrel is much better for accuracy.

If I were looking for a solid hunting rifle, I'd take a close look at yours. I'd consider a set of Williams front and rear sights (as a back-up for a scope), a new Monte Carlo style stock and maybe an adjustable Timney trigger. I think that $350 would be a very good price to pay for your rifle, considering the work that I'd have to put into it to make it the 'right' hunting rifle.

All of that being said, although I've owned and still own very fine hunting rifles (Winchester Model 70s, Remingtons and Rugers), my personal favorites have been sporterized Springfields.
