I would like to hear from those of you that own a gun chambered in 17 Win Super Mag, the new rimfire cartridge.
First, is it really powerful enough to take coyote with a shot to the vitals not just head shots ? Will they crumple in their tracks at say 150 yards, or will they run off ? For the most part, the coyote around here tend to be 35 to 50 pounds, but I have taken some that were much bigger.
Second, I would like to know how noisy is it ? Does it compare to a .223 or what ?
Third, does your gun need to be cleaned every 10 rounds to maintain accuracy ?

Thanks !

I have the 17 WSM in the heavy SS barrel. I have shot a lot of paper but no critters yet. To answer some of your questions. I don't know about the killing part yet. The sound is not as loud as a 223, but is loud enough. The accuracy is pretty good and I have not had to clean it every 10 shots to maintain accuracy. I just clean when I'm through shooting it before I put it up as I do all my guns. If you are calling the yotes you should not have to shoot that far. Bare in mind I live Southern Oklahoma and there is a lot of timber and typical shots are 75 yards and closer.

howdy to answer your question, yes it will kill a coyote with a vital shot. crumple in his track at 150yds maybe if you got lucky and hit the head shot. chances are very high there going to run bet on it. the biggest coyote I ever killed with this bullet was 30-35 lbs I shot him in the boiler room and he ran 40yds. I think that the 223 is loader I don't know how you would measure such a thing. as far as cleaning every 100 rounds and we had no problems with this rifle. let me get this straight you hunt coyotes that weight 35-50lbs.good lord man what are you feeding them? in Colorado a 35lbs coyote is a damb big coyote I hate to say it but if your going to shot coyotes 50lbs or more the 17wsm may not be best choice. well that's my 2cents worth have fun and good luck.

I haven't taken any yet, Tim, but the coyotes we have here are easily 40 - 50 lbs, about the size of a slightly smaller German Shepherd. They've been eating well this year, apparently, as they're not usually as healthy looking and large as recent sightings indicate; we haven't seen many rabbits this summer either, and that's very odd. For such beasts, I wouldn't use anything less than my .243, though there are a number of other calibers that would work as well. I doubt that .17 is one of them, and being shot by one would likely just annoy the critter.

I think a 22 magnum rifle will knock down a coyote pretty fast wouldn't a .17 be similar.Even though it's a lighter bullet weight the speed will make up for the difference right. In that case it doesn't a quick follow up shot will finish the job.they are pretty accurate rounds. Lot's of you-tube video's coyote hunting with a 22 magnum.I shot at a coyote on a full run about 100 yards away with a Ruger Mini-14 once and missed him.It was his lucky day I guess. The rounds hit all around him and they all missed.I think it must have been Wild-E-Coyote or something.

Speed of the bullet will give you more energy on paper, but in real life, it's the weight of the bullet that will get you the penetration that you sometimes need. These fast little bullets tend to break up on impact, leaving you with a shallow wound. Where as, a good heavy bullet will give you the penetration you need to reach vital organs, and break large bones. I don't own a .17, they blow up squirrels, and rabbits, damage to much meat. I would think it under powered for anything larger than 15 pounds. That doesn't mean that taking yotes with a 17 can't be done, just that maybe it shouldn't be done.

howdy no i dont think 22mag is good at all . don't get me wrong I like 22 maq but you use it your going to wound a lot of coyotes. and then they limp away suffer for days and die.i heir it all the time oh hell there just coyotes. true but crap. as hunters we have an obligation to make a clean ethical shot when possible.the 17 and 22 mag might be similar but they both share one thing they don't have the energy to get the job done !! . IMOP I belive if you have the resources to do so you should start with a least a 223

I have killed a lot of hogs with the 17 hmr. The thing is shot placement! I generally shoot them in the ear or right behind it. The thing is you have to be patient and wait for the right shot. I live by the 1 shot 1 kill rule. I do not get in a hurry and I don't take running shots.
