Past and Present Where Americans Turned the Tide in World War I
By RICHARD RUBIN
In an area of northern France, where the land bears century-old wounds of battle, visitors can walk the grounds of history.

Here at my age of 81, I can still remember fathers of schoolmates who couldn't go back to the labor on Iowa farms because of war injuries....sometimes in that little Iowa town of Greeley several of them maybe in the barber shop playing pool and coughing into skanky old rags...watery eyes and wheezy breathing and some with visible scars caused by the mustard gas used in the trenches of France...You read my story I told you about my old movie star friend, Walter Brennan, who talked and cackled the way he did from being exposed to the Lewisite gas in France.. Soon, there will be no one to remember them personally...we now have the Battle of the Bulge, Chosin Reservoir, Khe Sanh...If you veterans read these remarks of mine, you have your memories...Will they linger 100 years as these have done? Chief
