Gun Choice Spurts

Greetings,

Not sure if you folks are like this but I seem to go in spurts as to what I shoot. And these spurts seem to last for a good year or two. Just coming out of a WWII era phase where I bought six rifles along with all their appropriate slings, bayonets and scabbards. I just like things to look correct. I had a blast collecting all the associated doodads like dies, powder, brass, molds and the like.
Seems now to be headed toward shotguns. Through chance I picked up a couple of Winchesters from a friend. One a 97, 30" full and the other a model 42 that's in great shape. Yesterday I bought another 97, this one has a 20" barrel and a cylinder choke. Now I have a trap and skeet gun (haha). Can you imagine the looks I'd get at the range?
So I guess I was wondering if any of you followed the same pattern? It's not that I don't ever shoot the others, just seem to focus more (a lot more) on one.

P.S. Just picked up my first pound of Titegroup. With all this shuffling seems I have to change things. Now the Unique, Bullseye and a few others need to go toward the shotguns. :)

Couldn't tell you how many police guns I've seen at skeet ranges - including the old High Standard Model 10B bullpups, but it's a fair number. The great majority of our collection consists of WW1/2 rifles and pistols, and aside from the Vetterli and three Carcanos we have ammo for each, but generally just enough to say we have it - as in one box of 30/40 for the Krag and a Winchester '95. Before moving from NY to Alaska most of my shooting was in high power matches as well as practice sessions for same - 30'06 and .308 at 200, 300 and 600 yards. These days I'm limited to 200 yards - the range backstop's a mountain, and it must be the air or something but my 70 year old eyes don't seem to be quite as sharp as they once were. No big deal, I still have a lot of fun with the Garand, M1A, AR, SKS, various Enfields and Mausers, Webley and such.

I enjoy all types of shooting. I still go to the pistol range as much as I can to keep sharp with them. I enjoy rifle shooting and just picked up a new rifle and scope. Shotguns and clay shooting is my all time favorite. I do that almost ever week.

Now I didn't say I didn't love all of them. I'm just saying I'll gravitate toward a specific type for a while. Unfortunately my schedule doesn't allow for 2-3 trips to the range a week. Right now I'm lucky to get out once a week. However this may change. I looked in to joining an indoor range. For $190 a year I can shoot any day/time I like. Thinking this may be a good stress reducer for lunch.

Why yes it is. Although a bit confusing. It doesn't have any "US" markings on the receiver nor the stock but it does have the three horizontal notches at the end of the barrel for the heat shield and bayonet lug. The serial number dates it as manufactured in 1925. I'll post some pick when I pick it up on the 4th and maybe some folks here can help me straighten it out.

I've been getting a craving for revolvers for the past few weeks... I was about to put a deposit down on a Ruger SP101 (felt like fate when I held it) but then I read about the S&W M&P R8 .357mag so I decided to see if I could even get a hold of one from our distributors. Can't find one anywhere, but I put a deposit down in our system and decided I wanted it. Kept checking for it UNTIL my boss told me that he ordered 3 of the Coonan .357mag 1911's. with only a few dollars difference between that and the S&W R8, I'm really torn on what I want. When I stay confused for a while on a firearm purchase I usually end up with neither and spend the money on ammo or the Mrs. gets to go on a spree...

Firpo, I'm much the same as you describe. My spurts seem to last for several years, however. Colt SAA's consumed me for at least a decade along with Winchester lever rifles....but they kinda go together. Then it was long range shooting with two Shiloh Sharps and a Savage tactical. That had about a 9 or 10 year run and for 12 years the only rifle I hunted with was a Shiloh Sharps Montana Rough Rider in 45-90. A lot of game fell to that rifle. Muzzleloaders, traditional ones, have always been in the mix but when we moved back from Wyoming to Missouri for 5-6 years nothing else came out of the safe. Back about 20 years ago or maybe a bit more I acted on an interest I always had and bought my first double rifle then shortly thereafter my first drilling. They ebbed and flowed in and out of my shooting hobby then about 5 years ago an interest and passion for German and Austrian rifles, drillings and combination guns was ignited in my soul and finding and using them has become all consuming. The more unusual, obsolete and rare the cartridge they are chambered in the better. Today I just finished working up a load for a 9 X 57R in a Franz Jaeger drilling. Not all that unusual on the other side of the pond but not common here by any means....and you could throw in CZ handguns at the same time as the rifles, drillings and combination guns.
