308 Win or 5.56
Has anyone tried one of these Ruger Gunsite Scouts yet? They look pretty good to me. I've been getting the itch for a new gun and was considering buying one.
I've shot the .308. With it's heft, I think .308 is perfect for it. .223 would feel underpowered, when you can get a Ruger American in that caliber.
Also, don't buy the gun if you have any intentions of putting a standard scope on it. Either open sights or specifically a scout style scope, which has loooong eye relief and is meant to be shot with both eyes open.
I have one in .308. I like it for the most part, but I hate the magazine. It's a pain to load. It's a single stack, but doesn't load quite like a single stack pistol mag. I wish Ruger would have made it a staggard mag where the rounds would kind of snap in like a military rifle. I'm thinking about trying one of the poly mags for it. Don't know if it will make a difference or not.
It shoots well with 168 grn Federal Premium (Sierra BTHP) ammo. 150 Core lokt is OK. 147 PMC fmj is horrible.
I do like the forward mounted scope set up. The open sights are pretty beefy. The front blade is thick, so if you try it at 100yds, it covers a lot of your target. But it will be quite durable.
You can mount a regular scope, but you need the Ruger style scope mounts. You can see the "notches" for the scope mounts in the close up. I have a small rail on the scope for my light also.
I already have two .308 rifles, one bolt, and one semi-auto. Would love to own as many guns as is possible, but in reality, I don't need another .308 rifle.
My SIL has one in 308. Quite a fine shooter even with open sights. Can't comment on the mag issue, I made him do all the reloading since I bought the ammo.
If Ruger is going to lay claim to the title "Gunsite Scout" Then why didn't they make the weapon to Jeff Cooper's spec's? It doesn't have a clip slot and it fails to meet the weight requirement! The rear sight could have been moved forward to the receiver ring position! Could it be that there not enough material at the rear receiver bridge? For shame on you Ruger for producing a Bastardized version of Cooper stolen idea. The Germans made Cooper idea in the Mauser G33/40 way back when!
I'm like you, I don't think Jeff Cooper would be real happy with Rugers version. Still I would like to see what he would do with it to make it what he wanted.
Cooper came up with a version that met with his approval 15 or more years ago made by a European company the name of which evades me. It even came with a picture of him ho;ding one. It even had a built in folding by-pod in the stock.

My shooting partner is quite pleased with his. He mounted a quality EER 3-12X40 scope on it and it has proven to be quite accurate with the British surplus, Federal ball, as well as his hand loaded .308's. The ability to acquire scoped targets with both eyes open makes the rifle really great for snap shooting of moving targets.
