I have a Harrington and Richardson Arms Co, Topper M48 from Worchester Mass. with serial #H57288. I would like to know how old it is and what it would be worth.

fuzzy,
'J' indicates manufacture in 1949. If it is the standard "Topper" single barrel, or equivalent - values will be pretty much the same as quoted above in post #2 - in 20 ga Mod choke (add about 10 bucks for full choke) poor to fair - $55 - $65 up to EXCELLENT $115 to $135 - higher if As NEW IN BOX w/ box and papers - add $25. Most sell for less than 90 bucks.

BB = 1984. These will "top out" around $130 in EXCELLENT condition - if it needs a firing pin and "some" other parts - I'd offer $60 and buy for $75 - but only IF, the wood and metal are in decent condition and not too badly worn or chipped, cracked etc. You can find NIB Topper SB-1 12 ga, on sale in the big box stores for $150 to $170.

Parts are available at www.e-gunparts.com - this is the Numrich/GPC site. Click on H then Harrington & Richardson then scroll down to shotguns and click on Topper or model 158. I'd go there and get the exact page for you - but I'm having a real slow down on my DSL tonight due to something and can't connect with that site.

The Topper models were/are utility grade shotguns. They are strongly made, have self-adjusting lock-up and fairly simple but robust actions. I'd say they are a good "quality" for the price - nothing fancy, but usable with hundreds of thousands sold and still being sold under the Remington / Marlin ownership.
