I hope this is the correct place to post this. If not, sorry Mod's.

I picked up an H&R 12 gauge Pardner pump yesterday at Cabellas. I decided this morning to run a few rounds through it before I cleaned it. I put four rounds of 3" 00 buck through it. Each time I fired it, the breech opened up about half way. I called customer service and asked if they'd heard of this happening. They said it was normal and not to worry about it. They also said if I sent it back, they'd return it saying no problem found. I did a little searching on the net and there are a number of folks asking about this. The question is should I be worried about this. And, might there be a way to correct this? I have never had a pump action shoygun do this.

Bye the way, there is no blow back when the breech opens..
Thanks..

A little update, I called H&R again and talked to a different Tech. He told me the same thing, meaning not a problem. He also said that all pump shotguns will do this from time to time. That being said, I have 2 Remmington 870's that I've put a lot of rounds through and they don't do this. What say you...?

Remove all lube from the barrel locking shelf and from the locking lug. It's a common problem. Also, close it smartly.

I did make a point to make sure the action was locked after it happened the first time, and it is. I'll have a go at removing the lubrication. I tried it today with 2 3/4" shells and it did it only once, but the was only a crack of an opening. I finally just figured it was me pull back on the forend due to te recoil of the 3" shell.

Thanks for the reply and I'll give your suggestion a try. I don't believe is should do this under any circumstances..

Well, I cleaned the shotgun and there was indeed quite a bit of oil on the Locking lug and shelf. Got it all cleaned up and I'll give it a try when the weather breaks. The H&R Pardner is an 870 clone bye the way. Being a new gun, I was checking eveything and noticed two things about the bolt. First, when the bolt is locked (ready to fire) there is a little forward and back play in it. That would be left to right if you looking at it from the side. I checked it against my 870 and the amount of movement is about double the 870. It just seems excessive to me, but maybe not. Also, when in the locked position, I can push on the back end of the bolt from the side and I get some lateral movement. There is no movement on the 870. How much of a problem do you think this can be?

Well, just a little update to end this thread and for someone else that might benefit from the ingo. With regard to the two observations on the bolt movement in my last post, I went to Cabellas this morning and checked three other new H&R Pardners. They all had the same characteristics, so the conclusion is, they are designed that way. Nothing to worry about..
