I was at dunhams just the other day and of course had to go back to the rifles to look and the guy was back there and I ask him how much the mosins were because I was going to customize another and he said 300+ depending on which one! What happened to good ole days of 100 dollars?(Plus anyone have a good one they want to sell) I was wanting to put a ati stock on one since I already have customized this one.
Guy was smoking something for sure, although I hear that Dunhams has a habit of screwing people. You can still get run of the mill 91/30's from AIM for $130, SOG for $114, Classic Arms for $140, even laminates at Bud's for $160.00
I noticed your front sight length. Mine shot about 20-24 inches high at 100 yards. I had to aim below the target at an imaginary spot on the grass to hit the target. I since then ordered a taller post off ebay and installed it to fix that hold under issue. Had to drill it a tiny bit to get the thing loose so I could knock the center post out.

I like that bolt. Did you order a whole replacement or send in yours for a partial mod?
Finally converted my Mosin. Going to be awhile before I can scope it since the next rifle will have a scope that I can also use on the Mosin (Savage Axis II XP 223 that has a Weaver Kaspar scope).

That Timney trigger you recommended is really nice. Can't wait to shoot it. You can't see it, but I put in the tall front sight post. It kind of looks like it will hit ok just peeking down the barrel and comparing to the sight. I have to get the laser in the action and see at night. Will try that out tonight may be.
Nice looking rig it sure is coming along. After shooting it with my 2 pound timney trigger and the archangel stock I fell in love it makes all the difference in the world and have you seen the ghost rings available for these mosins? Thinking about getting a set to put on my m44 since the front sight is bent.
That's interesting. The local Dunhams has them on sale this week for $139, regularly $199. You can view the ad by going to their website and choosing a southern Michigan location. They always have the ammo and 3 or 4 times per year it is $99 for the spam can.
Cabelas hasn't had any non-corrosive steel ammo for awhile. They are about $15 after taxes per 20 rounds. Not sure if it is due to the embargo or just low supplies. Theirs is .308. My barrel slugged out at 3.13. I shoot the 303 Brit rounds at 180gr (.311") that was recommended from this sight. It worked out the diameters worth of bullet in the case just fills the neck and gets the OAL of 2.860. As the case grows, the length will grow a tad. I am up to 2.870 now. I have some loads made up for 37 and 38 grains to try out may be this weekend. Now that I have my new free floating barrel, front post that doesn't require a 20-24 inch hold under and trigger, will start over to see what I get. Later when I get a scope for it, will have to repeat. I use a rest so may be I can get close to reality. I'm going to order some 150gr and try those as well for some distance attempts.
Sounds like you have got a plan. I'm about to order a recrowning tool and cut one down just a little and put it in an ati stock and I already have the ati bolt and scope combo kit I was wanting to build a cheap hunting rifle.
That is a good price. Locally they are almost 200. I really like SouthernGunAddicts muzzle brake. It made a huge difference for me. My old back was hurtin after 15 rounds of that steel but plate. I ordered a rubber butt pad. But now that I have the ArchAngel, it has it's own butt pad.

I used a pvc pipe with one end capped off (no glue needed) for removing the storage cosmoline off the gun. I didn't use hot water, I used mineral spirits, and wished I had used hot water, as some of my bluing thinned out. The hot water works and doesn't mess with the wood or bluing. Might need 2-3 hot water dumpings, but that is better I think. Spend some time with Hoppes copper remover for inside the barrel. It has taken several times to gt it under control.

Here is where I get my brass: http://www.grafs.com/catalog/product/productId/12651/inline/1

For bullets, I have been using 303 Bri .311" from midway. They are Speer brand: http://www.midwayusa.com/product/63...grain-round-nose-box-of-100?cm_vc=subv1638571 you can also get other weights. I was told from this forum about the 180 gr .311 bullets and the 37-38 grains of IMR4064 so have shot them but not sure how well they performed since I didn't have the latest additions and the prior hold under was huge. This is a fun gun.

I'd recommend a couple ebay tools, one that measures the firing pin length and the other that checks headspace.

i used mineral spirits as well, with a touch of naptha. it's 3 digit temp in florida.. so i cleaned it outside on contractors paper i keep to maks off stuff for painting.
surprisingly the bolts cam in looking grear.. reciever great too. wood has usual character marks.. but metal is fantastic. bayoy's look pristine with all finish intact. I don't pay much mine to the old oil bottle and leather ammo storage. I toss those into a 5g bucket of similar that i get with other milsurp rifles. my friends usually pilfer thru for one now and then..

May be I had some weak bluing, when I got mine out of the mineral spirits and cleaned it off, it looked a bit more pale than when it went in. That naptha is wicked stuff if it is this stuff http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/naphgen.html At least you won't have any moths in the barrel (alive at least, hihi).

Curious if you have shot it yet and where did your front sight post place the shot? I had a huge hold under to get it on paper. My earlier post was set for 300 meters if I read the articles right as the hold under was a good 24 inches or so low. I had to pick a spot in the grass below and in front of the actual target. If I can get out this weekend, I hope to see how it actually shoots using the new iron sight.
i shot mine at 100 yards max, and was quite pleased with the performance. standing i was getting 6" groups. fromthe bench more like 3", no adjustment.
yep.. naptha is good stuff. a lil lighter than mineral spirits. flashes off faster.. though not nearly as fast as acetone.
I use naptha and mineral spirits in painting. ( i restore antique tractors ). As a mator of fact I painted a 1958 ford 941 diesel rowcrop yesterday.. so had plenty of naptha and mineral spirits.. and other reducers around me... isocyanates in the hardner addatives too.
really good stuff there not such a big deal if not sensitive to it. IF sensitive to it. as much as a smell of it walking by a fresh painted object can send you to the hospital. fortunately i am not sensitive to it.. and while even a good charcoal and organic vapor filter on a fitler mask will not protect you completely. it goes a long way, and does help with the other solvents. I usually buy the best filter packs i can get. those are usually for organic solvents, acids, oil vapors and even escape-level of hydrogen sulfide..
Checked out the new sight post. Before the new post pin, the hold under was about 2 feet so had to guess on target placement as that meant focus on a spot in the grass before the target. Not I am high with the new sight pin. I can at least now adjust the rear sight to compensate. I have to set it at the 2 (for 200 meters), but that was at a spot just over 100 yards as nothing in between I could set up on from my dining room table. The guess got me close for the range. If I find the ammo set up that works best as I can do, I will file down the front post a tad. I like those adjustable colored post you can get. But am hoping by then, I will have a scope.

I will look down the barrel at the range and compare where the two grain bullets hit to get an sloppy aprox bullet drop idea.
Hey guys didn't want to start a new thread just for this but what have you guys seen for prices on mosins lately? I finally have the money to get one and haven't looked locally yet but I did find one shop that has them but they're $170. Seems high to me but wanted to see what everyone else has seen.
This is a pretty good adjustable front site. The guy who makes them was on the forum a while back offering a discount to members. Cant remember his screen name though.
J&G sales has them for decent prices. My Mosin is a 91/30 made in 1943 with a round receiver with a laminate stock. It had never been shot when I got it. $127 delivered with my C&R. A few years ago. If you want one, you had better do it quick. They are stopping the Russian imports.
I don't understand all the interest in Mosin Nagant rifles.....what's up with that? Damn ugly if ya ask me but was in Cabela's yesterday and they have racks of them for around $150 or so. Can someone please explain it ??
Reasons for the Mosin:
Fun to shoot
Fun to make reloads for them
Fun to hunt for that elusive best load for the gun
Fun to sport em up
If you get a decent shooter, that makes it all the more fun
Lets see...did I mention they are fun!
