Managed to get some Fiocchi 9 x 18 Ultra ammo,( expensive) when compaired to 9m Luger prices, saved all the cases and intend to reload same using 380acp FMJ bullets & 3.8 grns of Bullseye. & using 9mm Luger dies. Before doing so am wondering if anyone else has tried this out,as Ive heard so many warnings about this particular calibre being dodgy to play around with, so I thought for safety sake I`d ask around 1st with the hope that somebody else may have tried this out at sometime in the past. Thanks for any info.
The 9x18 Ultra, is that the same cartridge that is fired in the Russian Makarov? If it is, the diameter of the bullets is .366" and not .355-.356" that the 9mm and the .380 use.
No. They are different and not interchangeable The 9x18 Ultra uses a smaller diameter bullet than the Makarov, but I think it is slightly longer overall. I have only ever seen 9x18 Ultra with a truncated cone bullet, IIRC.
9x18Ultra is a rare bird. I've no personal experience with it but have the drawings.
I don't think 9x19 dies will work for the Ultra. It's pretty much a straight-wall case like the .380.
My scanner is on the fritz this morning but the 9x18Ultra is 9.50mm diameter from case head to case mouth. I suspect this is the original Ultra from the 1930's, which is essentially a stretched .380ACP, not the 1970's version which is usually called 9x18Police.
The drawing for the 9x18Police shows it as a slightly rebated rim:
9.50mm - case head (.380ACP diameter)
9.870mm - base of case right above the rim
9.675mm - case mouth
For this one, I think the 9x19 dies are too large. I think .38Super/ACP dies would work better to resize the base, but I'd bet that you'd need to do a small bump at the case neck with a .380(?) sizer to get the neck tension a little tighter.
Is this in a newer pistol with the tapered case or is it an old pistol that uses the straight-wall version?
I completely missed the Ultra. Please pardon me and disregard my previous post. I learned something new today. I guess I just ran with the 9×18 numbers.
