I have made some from a formula years ago, and have used it on and off. Works pretty good, but I usually have something else at hand. I forget what the formula is, but it shouldn.t be hard to find on the "net". It has automatic transmission fluid, kerosene, and a couple of other items.
That said, I haven't mixed any up in quite a few years. It works a lot better than the "new formula" Hoppe's #9 does.
For several years now I've just been using Kroil for powder/lead solvent...just judging by aroma and action, it's pretty darned close to the same stuff as Ed's Red and I've always got at least one gallon of it on hand out in the shop. http://www.kanolabs.com/
I use either Barnes CR-10 or Sweet's7.62 for copper fouling removal.
How would ed red work with a muzzleloader? I just bought a tc new englander. And its it really dirty more then the normal bp fouling it looks like it been shot and never cleaned I been wondering if the ed red would clean it
My experience : I have used Ed's Red on muzzle loaders and BPCR's. Also, on modern "white powder" firearms. This solvent works very well for me in all types of firearms. It is a wonderment how much carbon will come out of a modern gun after other common solvents have been used before Ed's Red. One must be mindful of that this solvent is made by individuals and may vary. Doing a search will quickly show that use with BP is controversial-some folks have had poor results.
