The use of Blank ammunition for Ceremonies is not new. However, the damage to the M1 Garand rifles is a common issue. I have received several M1 Garands for refurbishing from a local Veterans Honor Guard. Two (2) of these weapons had the "Blank Adapter" threads totally distroyed. The threads of the barrel were layed over & cut down to be totally useless. The Blank Adapters were not available. I can repair this, but my question is: "What Was The Cause(s) For This Damage" ? Let me put this in a perspective, 1999 the blank ammo was modified, the "Bottlenose" @ 11 gr. was replaced by the "Rosetta Crimp" @ 22 gr. Suppose, the same blank adapter was used for the new ammo. The force could be sufficient to cause this damage. The blank adapters at that time were 0.098" to 0.164"
Has anyone out there run across this problem ?
