According to article, 1889/96s were converted to 1896/11s by rebarreling, installation of a semi-pistol grip, fitting of a newly designed six round magazine, and new trigger guard to accommodate the new mag. It took some years for all 89/96s to be converted to 96/11 configuration, so production of the 1911 continued in parallel until 1918.
