Just came across this company selling .223, 55 gr, FMJ bullets for $75/1000 shipped. http://bulletheads.com/ I've never heard of them before and wonder if their bullets are worth having. $75/1000 shipped is a very good price if the bullets are any good.
Thanks SteveM. Your search skills are better than mine. I remembered that thread and tried to find it. I wonder if Mogunner ever got his money back on those!
Thanks for the link. I see I responded to that thread but didn't remember. I tried to check out ammo nation that was referenced, but no luck. Their web site is up but I could not find anything for sale.
Googled bullet heads and the reviews are pretty good. Could not find any accounts of undersized bullets.
I buy just about all of my .223/5.56 bullets from Xtreme, well actually I buy just about ALL of my bullets from them. I get an email from them every day telling the special of the day, every week or so they get back around to the .223/5.56 bullets. I have never been disappointed with xtreme.
I ordered 1,000 of the bullet head .223. I'll weigh and measure a large sample and if they don't look good I'll send them back. At that price they are at least worth a look. I'll post results when I get them.
Didn't get a refund, they told me to keep the bad ones and they shipped another 1k out right away that were fine. I ended up with about 250 out of that first batch that were undersize and would fall through the neck of the case when I tried to seat them. I'd take a Hornady or Xtreme bullet and it'd seat perfect. Gave the discards to my buddy, he'll toss them in the pot next time he casts.
I received the Bullet Head bullets today and I'm impressed with the quick delivery. I ordered some small items from Brownells at the same time and they didn't even ship until today.
I weighed and measured 20 bullets and the diameter was dead on .224 for every one. The weight varied more than other brands, but they still had die lube on them so maybe it they were clean there would be less variation. The overall length and ogive length varied quite a bit - more than any others I've measured.
I'm going to load some test rounds this weekend and will see how they group next week. I've attached the data for the bullet head and some data from hornady and sierra for comparison.
My experience with them was OAL's varied a lot more than Xtreme's and Hornady's. Accuracy is worse but still useable for plinking ammo, but I won't buy any more unless Xtreme keeps jacking their prices up.
After a close inspection I will be sending the bullets back. They have no chance of being even a little accurate. There are two main problems. First and most important is the base. The bullet bases are not uniformly flat and have small void spaces around the edges between the jacket and lead core. If the base is not perfectly flat and uniform high pressure gases will escape from the non-uniform area first and throw the bullet off. Void spaces around the edge means the bullet is non-concentric weight wise and that will cause a wobble as the bullet rotates at very high speed.
The second problem is the bullets are not concentric. If you roll them on a flat surface and watch the tip you can see the tip move up and down. If you roll almost any good bullet on a flat surface the tip does not move up and down it stays level. It's not hard to visualize how a non-concentric bullet will react at very high rotational speeds - it will wobble all over .
Because of the above I believe any accuracy would be purely accidental and I don't want to waste powder and primers proving the point.
And when you consider that you can get the Hornady 6000 count bulk packs at about $0.08 per bullet (currently $489 shipped at MidwayUSA) there isn't much incentive left to mess around with second tier bullets.
I sent Bullet heads an email this morning saying I would be returning the bullets. About an hour later I received a response saying they had credited my credit card with the purchase price and to send the bullets back at my convenience. I have not seen the credit show up in my account yet but the credit card company may be slow.
Anyway I thought they are good to do business with even if I don't like their bullets very much.
Yep, they were fast to send me another 1k bullets when I complained about the first batch. So now it look like I have 1800 rounds of slingshot ammo...guess that's what I get for "stocking up" as I've been loading and shooting my Hornady and Xtreme bullets.
I just bought 1,000 Hornady .224, 55 gr FMJ for $85 shipped. That is the best price I could find when including shipping. At the rate I've been shooting .223 those will last about 2 months.
I found them on this facebook group: https://www.facebook.com/groups/TheBulletBank/ The guy posting them is Bill Stoldt. I've bought from him before and he will sometimes have some very good prices.
Thanks, I just put in a request to join the group.
