So I am at an auction last night and I do not usually buy this stuff because of my ignorance but when I was able to get it for $7 I grabbed it. Shakespeare Centurion 1960 Fishing Reel. Great petina and seems to be in perfect working order. Has a cork spindle to wrap the line on. Drag works as well as the line guide. Very smooth. I have no idea if i pizzed $7 away on a wall hanger or if something worth a few dollars more than I paid?? Any ideas??

You really won't know how well that reel works untill you put some line on it, and add a little weight to the end of the line. With presure, it might slip. If it works well, then you did good. There may be a collector value on a reel this old, but I wouldn't have a clue in that department. I do know that some of the lures form days gone by are worth a lot of money. Maybe your reel is too!

You did good on my opinion. I would be very unhappy if my 1960 were sold at any price remotely close to that amount seeing as it is irreplaceable.

As far as being operational there is 100% chance if the parts are on it.

It has no drag to slip. The drag on this beauty is your finger on the spool.

Mine is still with the old solid glass rod.

Auto part Fishing rod

Enjoy

Great looking old real. When I was 13 I broke my hip and spent six months on crutches. Dad said this was a good time to master the level wind real. I had a brand new Criterion real and fiberglass rod. So dad set me in a chair in the yard and a target a good cast away. I spent hours doing that and became a proficient bait caster, a skill that lasted me a life time. I graduated to the Ambassador 5000 series of reals but a level wind has always been my favorite. This last year I gave all and I mean all of my fishing equipment away. Fishing in Ohio mostly sucks.

I hope I die with a fishing pole in my hand! Second choice, sitting under a very large pine tree, with a gun, waiting on a trophy buck to walk by! To me that's going out 1st Class!

I was just breaking out some fishing equipment after a few years of not fishing and found my old Criterion. This post is what I found when I looked it up.

Anyway, I plan on doing some fishing with my Penn 9/0 when I get off work again. There is a point of rocks at Perdido Pass that seem like a good place to fight sharks from the shore.
