Hi All,

It's taken a good while but I'm finally building up my 22 Mag inventory. After picking up a couple of boxes here and there this is where things stand at present. If you think 22LR is hard to find.....out here this stuff is like looking for a four leaf clover. :) I know it's not much compared to some but for me I'm happy to have what I do.

I have managed to put away 550 rounds of .22WMR. Occasionally I get notified of it being available at MidwayUSA, and I order some. Same way I managed to amass a decent amount of .22LR and .17HMR.
Local sources never have it, or price it like it's made of gold.

I might find 100 rounds of the stuff, if I looked really hard. I have two hand guns that shoot .22 Magnum, one being a Davis derringer and the other an NAA mini revolver. I don't go out and practice with either gun so I don't shoot it enough to buy it. I do look at it occasionally at my LGS but I ain't paying the price he wants for it.

WV,

$40 holy smokes. I've been picking them up for $17 thinking that was expensive. Guess I'm getting them for a steal. I was in the same position as GD, having a Single Six that was my only 22WMR I owned. Then about two months ago a Marlin 25MN fell in my lap which proded me to start stocking up a bit.

Looks like Mogunner has everyone beat. With the current situation here in Crazy California thanks to L.A. and the San Francisco area we're pretty much living on borrowed time. I can see it all now, strip searches at the CA border to make sure I'm not smuggling in any of those evil weapons and ammunition. Everyone knows there weren't any murders before guns were invented.

Wow. I've still got most of the 150 rounds I bought when I first got my Single Six about 38 years ago. I've put many, many rounds of lr through that gun but just a few magnums. I always thought it was just too expensive to plink with.

I did find 50rd box of 22mag at a hardware store here. I think it was for about $25. It looks like Ace is the place. lol. I'll have to double check. Wallyworld here never has small caliber ammo. I do find 22lr at Academy. 9mm and up you can find without any trouble.

Didn't realize they were interchangeable. Give it a go and let us know how it works. My LGS has WRF as well.

That's good to know. Would I be correct in that you can't go the other way ie WMR in a WRF?

I owned a Single six for a very long time. My youngest son wanted it, had a passion to own it so I gave it to him 10 years ago. Didn't even want the magnum cylinder. I still have it in my "What have I here" box. In a little maroon cloth bag.

I pick it up where I find it, and at prices I want to pay.

Try this web page for leads on any ammo (the link is to 22WMR):

I just order 500 rounds of CCI Mini-Mag 22WMR through one of the suppliers listed there. The pricing, while not terrible high, is still not where it was before Obama. It may never return to those levels.

You might (??) be able to shoot 22LR in a 22WMR gun except for a few things:

*It won't feed through an semi-auto magazine (too short and the lips loose control of the new round before the bullet has started into the chamber.

*The chamber of the 22WMR is much longer so the bullet as it leaves the case during firing has a long way to travel to find the beginning of the rifling and that give is a chance to yaw destroying accuracy.

*I believe I read that there is a difference in diameter such that the 22LR bullet might rattle around a bit in the bigger 22WMR barrel. Again that destroys accuracy.

* Yes, I know about the Ruger Single Six that is convertible between 22LR and 22WMR but you have to change out the cylinder which controls the bullet of the 22LR all the way to the end of the cylinder.

Using 22LR in a 22WMR gun is NOT the thing to do, in my opinion.

Thanks mogunner. Last night I read an article by Chuck Hawks who explained it as being like a .38 vs a .357. Bullet diameters are the same however the case is longer in the WMR. There's an LGS by my house that has had WRF for a good year and hasn't moved. Not knowing "the secret" I haven't even found out how much they are asking. Also in the article it mentioned to beware of magazine fed guns as it may have feeding issues. Not a problem for Single Six revolvers. If try don't want an arm and a leg for them I'll start buying a couple of boxes at a time and save the WMR for my Marlin bolt rifle.

The WMR case is fatter too, and a totally different bullet type. .22WMR uses a standard bullet type while the .22LR uses a heeled bullet - thus the case diameter difference. You "CAN" shoot a .22LR in a .22WMR chamber, but it isn't recommended......

Yep, if it hadn't been moving then you might get it at a steep discount just so he can move it. Perfectly fine in revolvers although CCI says not too for some reason, more than likely just a CYA move on their part. Gander Mountain here in Fenton probably has 1k boxes of it sitting on their shelf, lol

A couple years back, I had several guns stolen. One was an old Tanfoglio TA-76 revolver in .22WMR. The Grandad of today's Heritage revolvers. I still have two .22WMR rifles, the Marlin 25MN and the Mossberg 640KD Chuckster. The Marlin is a tackdriver, The 640KD is a real beauty, but I have yet to find the 'magic bullet' load that it really likes. It should shoot better than it does.
Since I have ammo now, I need to do a " .22WMR" range day soon.

Bigdog,

I think we got you confused. In my example the WRF is the .38 Special and the WMR the .357 mag. I know the LR is altogether different. Thanks

No confusion here. I don't have or shoot the WRF flavor. But some folks DO try shooting the LR in a WMR gun. I have done so myself. I have read that .22WRF in a .22WMR chambered gun can work, but no experience there. I have never even seen the WRF cartridge.
