Range trip

Well the Old Guys went to the range today but we experienced lousy conditions. The temperature was fine and the skies were partly cloudy but the wind as real bad. No way we were going to be able to do any accurate shooting. The wind was strong and could not make up which direction it wanted to blow. The range is in a small hollow and trees line the range. So it swirled this way and that and was pretty darned strong. I am no judge of the mph wind that was blowing but this was the kind of windy day March is famous for. The leaves would blow across one way only to turn around and come back the opposite direction. A gust came along while I was making up targets and cleaned the targets and the cardboard backers right off the table. While I was sitting on the observers bench it blew one of the chairs over and shortly it blew another over but in the other direction. It blew over more than one coffee cup. Later I hear a crash and found the wind had caught one of the doors on the range shed and blew it off the hinges. Getting the picture? One of the guys is a relative new shooter and he had a new scope mounted on his 10/22, the one with the Mannlicher stock, and the wind was driving him crazy trying to get any kind of reasonable 50 yard zero. Groups sizes for all us were more the size of a fifty cent piece than something you would want to see. We sort of gave up and just resorted to some plinking at steel and those spackle marshmallow that Jim makes. Heck we were even missing those and they are usually an easy target.

I had recently purchased an Uncle Bud's Bulls Bag to use benchresting and I was looking forward to trying it out. I think it is going to be great in holding the rifle steady but with today's wind it was little help. We all had our handguns along but we spent so much time messing with the rifles in the wind that we never got to the pistols. One of the guys had to take delivery of a new Honda at 6:00 PM so we decided to just pack it in and call it a day. I still beats sitting around the house. I didn't waste time trying to take any pictures since there was nothing much to show. Better luck the next time.

Rifles we tried to shoot were a Savage .17 HMR, Winchester Wildcat .22lr, Ruger 10/22 with Mannlicher stock, and a Ruger 10/22 Target. We should have kept the rifles in their covers and shot the pistols.

Well Todd your bound to have a good day soon. Spring seems to be coming in real slow this year, it's like everything is a month behind. But the good news is that usually means next year will be a late winter.
