Hi All,

I have a Winchester Model 12 (takedown) that has a hokey, homemade magazine pin spring and I'd like to make a replacement, closer to original. Looked online with Numrich and a few others who are all out of stock so I'm faced with making one of my own. Anyone have a good suggestion as to what material I should start with? I have two Model 1897's I can use as an example, I'm guessing they'd be similar, but I'm not sure what to start with. I'm thinking bailing wire probably wouldn't be good . Any suggestions would be appreciated. Maybe "rawright" can make me one on that fancy new mill of his :p.

Are you looking for the spring or the pin? If the pin, I'd use a nail. If it's in a place where it gets a lot of stress, I'd probably use one of those hardened nails they use for construction metals (Simpson, for instance), grind it to size and shape, the heat it with a torch and quench it in oil to reharden it.

I'm assuming he needs the spring inside the pin, if so, it could be fabricated from a few different other types of springs like an AK47 pin retaining spring or an AR hammer spring (just have to clip it where the squared end meets the back of the hammer so the 90 degree bend wouldn't have to be made then curl the opposite end.)

NP hit the nail on the head. That's the little bugger I need. Thanks for the help gents. Let me see what I can come up with. This is going to sound kind of strange but my daughter welds and is going to bring me some Tig welding wire, various sizes, to see if they'll do the trick. If I do get one to work would it be a good idea to temper it?

That depends on the alloy; she would probably know what needs doing. Generally, unless you're going to harden it first - usually by heating it and quenching the piece - there should be no need for tempering. If you're just going to bend and twist it, I doubt that it will need it.

Hmmm... Looks like Alpo has a better solution! :D
