I've been giving this some thought and I'm leaning towards they are just for recreation and fun shooters.Compared to the capacity of 15 round auto-pistols,I can't see cranking back the hammer and firing off one shot at a time if you really needed to defend yourself. But they sure are fun to shoot I must admit! And there have been master trick shooters that hit targets almost within the same second. Some guns can be categorized of having no real purpose but a fun shooting camping recreation guns I suppose. Many people carry the NAA-22 magnums but other than the reasons I mentioned they make me feel outgunned if I needed to defend myself.Another thought does comes to mind, that they do slow down your rate of fire and make you aim much better. What's your thoughts on Single Action Guns!

P.S.My 2000th post!

Not my first choice, but I wouldn't hesitate to use it for home defense if that's all I had, although I do prefer something with a bit more capacity and at least double/single action on the street.

I agree whole heartedly. But those first shots fired don't have to "target" accurate, they just have to be some where in center mass. Combat accuracy.

Statistics are wonderful things - for statisticians. For other people, they don't mean so much.

There are ten of us involved in shootings. FBI says 2.5 rounds average, so for ten shooters that comes to 25 shots. If the other nine of you fired ONE shot each, I had to fire SIXTEEN, to get the average right.

There's liars, damn liars and statisticians.

I believe Goliath had David outgunned and look what happened to him.

Some of this has to do with confidence in yourself and the firearm you choose. If you aren't confident in a revolver, SA or DA, then you have no business carrying one. However, no one can say that a person who is confident and competent with a SA or DA revolver is undergunned or denigrate the use of one. Who here would want to go up against Jerry, (is that right), Miculek(?) armed with a DA revolver? Or Ed McGivern or Elmer Keith or Bill Jordan armed with revolvers when they were alive? Extreme examples, maybe, maybe not. I can think of a lot of men I've known that were absolutely flippin' deadly with a revolver, either action. 'Course that was back in the days when revolvers were what almost everyone carried. What happened was a lot of folks looked at the 6 rounds in the revolver and the 15 in a double stack semi-auto and thought their prayers had been answered. If you can't hit him with 6 what makes you think you can hit him with the next 9? I know...two perps. That's still 3 shots each. 3 perps, a double tap for each. More than that and you need a shotgun or help.

I see the double stack 9 and DA revolver sort of like when the US military adopted the M-16 with it's reduced caliber cartridge. One Marine opined, "they made the cartridge smaller, moved the targets closer and they call this progress?"

If 5, or 6, rounds of ammo is not enough to defend myself, then I have to ask why I put myself in that situation to start with.

As mentioned prior by others, statistics have shown that shootouts rarely last beyond a couple shots. Most perps aren't trained gunmen, they often flee the moment a victim even presents a gun, and all but the craziest or most determined stay around to engage once the banging has began.

Odds are that two pops from a even a derringer, whether they hit or not, will cause the engagement to end with the cessation of hostilities. ...which is all that a lawful defensive shooting is wanting.

Now, will a single action revolver accomplish such? The answer is, yes. However, one must be proficient in the load/reload activities that are associated with a gate-type single action revolver just in case. Countless, upon countless people have successfully used SAA type revolvers in defensive situations since the inception of those guns. And the only thing that has truly changed is that the badguys may have a more advanced type firearm. For the most part, the badguys' methodology and manners haven't changed - they still prefer not to get shot, just like the rest of us.

BTW, I occasionally carry my Ruger (old) Vaquero .45Colt.

I'm going to try again.

I took a bit of flak on my original post when I stated:

Do it if you want to,,,
This is free America after all,,,
You may do pretty much what you want.

But don't try to justify your personal preference as a preferable thing.

And don't use the reason that you shoot them better,,,
That just tells me you haven't practiced enough with a SA/DA revolver.

C'mon people,,,
You know better than this.

I did a poor job of conveying my point which is simply this,,,
If you want to carry a SA revolver for self defense,,,
Do it and don't let anyone tell you not to.

I often carry a semi-auto pistol that is older than my 64 years,,,
And I've been in some very spirited conversations about my choice of gun,,,
But in all of them I have simply stated my reasons and don't ask others to agree with me.

What I don't like in the hundreds of threads I've read on this topic,,,
Is when someone tries to justify it by attempting to argue that it's somehow as good.

Carry the type of gun that you want to,,,
Practice with it until you are as good as Bob Munden,,,
This is America and you are allowed to make your own decisions.

But trying to sway others to your way of thinking,,,
Just to give a little more validity to your personal decision,,,
Is a practice that does no one on these forums any kind of good service.

I love SA revolvers,,,
I own five and shoot them regularly,,,
And if one was closer than my EDC when I needed it,,,
I would not hesitate to grab it and try to defend my home and self.

But it's not the preferable choice by any means,,,
And it's poor advice to try and convince someone otherwise.

Carry what you want as long as you have confidence in it,,,
You don't need anyone's approval of your choice.

>And don't use the reason that you shoot them better,,,<

I think I understood you. Over to the cowboy wire, time and again, some feller will ask about carrying his favorite hogleg for self protection.

Someone will tell him that it is a bad idea, and he'll come back with, "But I shoot in matches with this, twice a month. I practice with it four times a week. I shoot forty thousand rounds a year through this gun, so I can stay competitive. I SHOOT THIS BETTER THAN I SHOOT MY 1911."

Maybeso he does, but I still think there are better choices out there.
