A good friend of mine has talked about his Granddaddy's old Winchester a number of times. It was handed down to his Father and about a week before his Father passed away suddenly, his Father told him to take the rifle home with him. We had talked about it some before, but yesterday he started talking about it again and I questioned him about this rifle.
He said it was a 45-70 with a long octagon barrel. I said it's an 1886 Winchester. He then said it had a brass piece and a lock for the lever. I then told him it was an 1876 in probably 45-60 or 40-60. He said it looked like it had never been shot much and had all the finish blah blah blah and was valued by a gunsmith to be worth between $18,000 and $30,000. He texted me pictures when he got home last night and he was right.
He has an 1876 Deluxe Winchester in 45-60, serial number 49,XXX made in 1884 with 3X Walnut, straight grip, checkering on grip and fore end, 28" octagon barrel, plus has 100% blueing everywhere, original varnish on the wood, cleaning rod container in butt stock, flip up sight, 1 trigger.
Holy crap, I offered to ........well never mind, but I would estimate it to be worth around $26,000 to $30,000, depending on if it was auctioned or straight sale. BTW, it will not be sold by him or his son. I might get to fondle it. I'm going to buy a box of ammo from Buffalo Arms and see if we can shoot it. Boyohboyohboyohboy!!
