Choke Depth

I want to saw off Stoeger coach gun barrels down to 18 1/4" in length from the current 20". The barrels are choked for improved cylinder on the right and modified choke on the left. When I put my hack saw away, I'm curious, will any of the choke be left? That is, how deep do the chokes go before getting to the straight bore? It's just a matter of curiosity since the gun is not for hunting, but for social occasions.

I think a better question would be "How far down does the solder go?"

SxS shotgun barrels are not soldered together the entire length. I have heard that, for modern ones, the are, pretty much, only soldered at the breech and the muzzle. Would really suck to cut the muzzle solder joint off, and and have your barrels only together at one end.

This is my 1860s-vintage Husqvarna. For those that don't read x-rays, it's a negative. The darker areas have less stuff.

So first there is the big black. That's the bare film with nothing on it. Then there is the barrels, centered, going from top to bottom. You can see a white line on each side - that's the outer edges of the barrels. You can see the inside of the barrels - dark, but not as dark as the bare film because there are two layers of barrel there. And in the center a thick white line. That is the rib, running down the center, and the solder joint between the barrels.

Notice, in the center of the thick white line. There's an inch of white, and then an inch-and-a-half of black, then an inch of white, repeat, repeat. The inch-and-a-half of black is where there is no solder. And this gun's 150 years old. They don't use as much any more.

Oh, and for those wondering, the white line, near the bottom, going cross-ways, is the barrel-mounted sling swivel.

Phoenix is large enough there is bound to be an NDT outfit. https://www.google.com/search?q=phoenix+ndt&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8

Find one, tell them what you want to do, and get them to take a picture of your barrels, like that one of mine. Find out how far and how much is there, and see if it is possible.

Might be a very do-able idea. Might not. X-ray is the best way to tell.

THEN y0u can worry about choke.
