I reloaded a batch of 45 acp too deeply due to a faulty caliper which, should have been carefully checked. Lesson learned-vigilance is key! Nevertheless, based on Nosler 7th ed, using a JHP 230 grain bullet, tested OACL is at 1.200 inches. Mine were placed at 1.180. I have used a kinetic hammer and with most of the bullets, I was able to lengthen the bullet without removing it and then I re-seated it to a depth of about 1.255 (this feeds nicely at that length). Win 231 powder, 5.3 grain were used with Roze Zero 230 grain bullet. Any harm in doing what I have done by this method of re-seating it?
Probably be fine. It's cheaper than completely pulling the bullets and completely reloading them. The only problem I can see is if the powder is packed up at the bullet base from the force of the hammer. That could cause a squib load but I doubt it would with 231.
I've done it a hundred (at least) times. No harm other than what Alpo said, and if you reseated the bullets to the proper length with your seat/crimps die, then you have probably already taken care of the problem.
I do it with no problems. Just have to learn to watch the bullet and know when to stop. I love the impact puller. Pretty slow but once I learned to use it, I have never messed up the tip of a bullet again! About something with the primer, what doe that poster think might happen?
I have found the best way to use the impact puller is to step out the back and pound on the cement pad!
I used mine today. I was loading 38 S&W and managed to get one too deep when setting up the die. Just a couple taps and life was good.
