Would you bring a gun?

Probably a dumb question, since this is a gun forum, but if so, what?

Here's the story. Science fiction novel. Guy's going up to the lake, on a motorcycle. Gonna spend a week in the cabin.

Stops off in a local store to buy a little fresh food, and then rides out to the cabin. Along the way, SUDDENLY, he is in a parallel dimension. No road - the "forest primeval". And he just has what he had on the bike - the little bit of food, a hunting knife, flashlight, first aid kit, and the tool kit for the bike.

Not a bad book, if you like sci-fi. Andre Norton, Here Abide Monsters.

Anywho - while it was listing his supplies, I was thinking, "I'd have a gun".

Not so much "I'm going into the wilderness, and need a gun for protection", as it was, "gonna be up at the lake for a week by myself - get in a little plinking".

I would have, stuffed in the saddlebags with the knife and flash, either a 4" Kit Gun or a 5 1\2" Single Six, with AT LEAST two boxes of shells, but more likely a brick. Don't weigh much, don't take up much room.

So I asked this on another board, asking them to abide by the restrictions - saddlebags on a motorcycle, and you have other stuff to carry.

I was amazed at some of the answers. Two or three large-bore pistols with hundreds of rounds of ammo. AK47.

That seemed like overkill - like they were anticipating the "lost in the wilderness" thing.

So lets see here.

You're going to spend a week in a cabin in the woods on the lake.

Your mode of transportation is a motorcycle with saddlebags (no trailers).

You need to keep room in the bags for other things.

Would you bring a gun? If so, what kind and size? How much ammo?

:)

A big fan of Sci-Fi and fantasy so I have to say at some point I've considered this kind of question...

But for me I'd just bring what I took with me up to the Black Hills last summer, both my XD pistols, service model and XDS. 9mm for each. though maybe my SR1911 would cover it now. One box of 50 rounds of ammo to go with it.

View attachment 111187 I'm packing up to go camping this weekend in the wilderness if you call it that. It's about 40 miles off the paved highway in the Nevada mountains.I have a permit to cut a Christmas tree also.Layers of clothes and a hat and beanie that covers your head and ears at night is key. Also important is a air mattress that separates your back from the cold ground and a large campfire and you can be pretty comfortable.
Coyotes come in close to camp and yelp and howl all night,it would be pretty cool to have night vision of some sort to see what's going on around me.Some of that stuff is more reasonably priced now a days. Here's the 3 guns I'm taking with me on this camp trip, shooting 9mm,38's and .223 reloads only.
I don't see a 50 cal in that pic .

Given the scenario, if I'm a gun owner in the US I'd have my EDC weapon, with plenty of extra mags. I'd also have survival gear just in case something went wrong. That survival gear would include the obligatory sheath knife and fishing gear, possibly a take-down rifle and ammo, paracord, fire-making gear and all the other bits and pieces for wilderness survival. For the book scenario the guns and ammo would onlly be good as long as the ammo holds out. It would be beneficial to be able to make further weapons--spears, bows and arrows, clubs, etc. and know how to make big traps for dinosaurs.

Well since I do ride motorcycle and have taken several trips (my furthest alone was from Rochester, NY area to Boothbay Harbor Maine). I normally carry my Ruger LC9S on camping overnighter to Adirondack Mountains with 2 magazines.

While I might not have a gun IN the shower, there is one handy! It would be just horrible to get shot in your own bathroom, while naked!!!
