5.7 x 28 FN

I was musing with an old shooting buddy about building a bolt gun in 5.7 x 28 FN. A small compact gun for a small compact cartage.

I found loading dies and load data for the cartage, but the only bullets I can find are by Sierra for the .22 Hornet. I swear that I read some were that Hornady made a bullet for it, but they don't list one. I saw on Google images that some one makes a lath turned bullet, but could not find who made them.

I considering a small bolt action something along the line of a Wichita, who is sorta no longer in business.(To bad for that.) Or maybe using an AR bolt and barrel to start with. I've seen those for sale. (Odd that the AR's for 5.7 x 28 are a recoil type like the AR's for 9 mm.) And, no I do not want to build one as a AR. I'm not dissing the gun. I'm just not a fan of shell shucking guns.

This buddy of mine has one of the FN 5 7 pistols and a boat loaded of ammo for it, and I've seen once fired brass online, so brass is not a problem.

Any Ideas on this ?

I do load it and I shoot it in a Thompson Contender (single shot) pistol.

The 5.7X28 ammo is somewhat hard to load for. If you look at the once fired brass, you will find that the shoulder of them have been rounded and are about 1/4 inch out from where they should be. When the PS-90 and the FiveseveN first came out, I bought one of each and I did save all my brass. One of my first posts here on TFF was concerning the 5.7X28 brass. If your buddy shoots it in his FiveseveN, pick up some of his brass and an unfired cartridge and compare them to see what I mean

There is not a lot of load data out there for it. I bought the Lyman #49 manual because it does have date. It has data for the 35 and 40 grain Hornady V-max bullets and for a 45 grain soft point. The Accurate Powder website (link below) also has data for a few powders and bullet weights. I use only Accurate #7 powder and mostly load 40 Hornady Z-max grain bullets I have also loaded Hornady 35 grain and "Dogtown" 34 grain bullets in mine. All the data I have seen suggest using a flat base bullet.

I just broke out me .0001 micrometer and measured three different loaded 5.7 x 28 FN rounds,(a FMJ, a hollow point, and a plastic tip.) and discovered the the bullets are indeed .224 in diameter. I thought they were .223 in diameter. Dummy me.

The gun will be built by me. I can get a chamber reamer from Clymer who is about ten miles from my home, so head space will not be problem. (I used to work for a gun manufacture and various machine shops in the past. So I'm confident in my abilities.)

I did consider a T/C Contender, but I only like them as a hand gun. I do not feel comfortable with them as a rifle.

The rounded and moved forward shoulder in the fired cases could be the result of the P-90, and 5-7, being bolt blow back guns. I've seen this with .357 SIG fired cases. Careful resizing can move that shoulder back.

Any way for now, I still have to come up with a viable gun design.

If and or when I get this built and shooting, I'll post my results.

Thanks for responding.

P.S. What kind of accuracy results are you getting, and at what distance ?

I have always thought that the 5.7 would make a pretty good rifle round and for a while I looked for a rifle chambered in it. I gave up on my search a while back and I don't even shoot the T/C much any more. My T/C pistol has a red dot scope on it so the accuracy is not all that great. I took it to the range about a month ago and I was getting shotgun pattern sized groups so I did not shoot it but a few rounds.

My brother always called it my "squirrel gun" because when I used to go down visiting in Florida, I would always take it with me and we used it to shoot squirrels out in the yard. I never seemed to miss them back then. I probably couldn't hit a deer with it right now.

I would be interested to see the progress on your build.

Cooper would be nice if I could find a used one in 50% condition. Pricey.

Ruger 77 would only work if I were to load at minimum. All the load data I found put the round at the mid 45,K PSI. Mite be to high a pressure for that gun with factory ammo.

Thanks

Nor Cal Mikie;

I'll look at that gun. Also, Savage is suppose to be bring out a bolt gun for the round maybe I read some where. I emailed Savage about that and are waiting for a response.

Really though, I want to build a rifle from scratch. I've never done that before. Only rebuilt.

Thanks
