Probably a dumb question, since this is a gun forum, but if so, what?
Here's the story. Science fiction novel. Guy's going up to the lake, on a motorcycle. Gonna spend a week in the cabin.
Stops off in a local store to buy a little fresh food, and then rides out to the cabin. Along the way, SUDDENLY, he is in a parallel dimension. No road - the "forest primeval". And he just has what he had on the bike - the little bit of food, a hunting knife, flashlight, first aid kit, and the tool kit for the bike.
Not a bad book, if you like sci-fi. Andre Norton, Here Abide Monsters.
Anywho - while it was listing his supplies, I was thinking, "I'd have a gun".
Not so much "I'm going into the wilderness, and need a gun for protection", as it was, "gonna be up at the lake for a week by myself - get in a little plinking".
I would have, stuffed in the saddlebags with the knife and flash, either a 4" Kit Gun or a 5 1\2" Single Six, with AT LEAST two boxes of shells, but more likely a brick. Don't weigh much, don't take up much room.
So I asked this on another board, asking them to abide by the restrictions - saddlebags on a motorcycle, and you have other stuff to carry.
I was amazed at some of the answers. Two or three large-bore pistols with hundreds of rounds of ammo. AK47.
That seemed like overkill - like they were anticipating the "lost in the wilderness" thing.
So lets see here.
You're going to spend a week in a cabin in the woods on the lake.
Your mode of transportation is a motorcycle with saddlebags (no trailers).
You need to keep room in the bags for other things.
Would you bring a gun? If so, what kind and size? How much ammo?
