They are actually a part of the rat family.
I have BBqued and eaten them in the past and no matter how they have been fixed I have never yet enjoyed the meat.
They come around the house a lot and we have to be careful of the dogs being out when they are here as they can be very dangerous.
Mr Moody
I didn't really. These are pics I had on photo bucket and I figured out how to post from there.
I have some of a black bear in the yard I want to post and can't figure out how. So if it is OK and I can copy and paste them I will send them so you can post for me.

Those darn things are so ugly I think you're doing them a favor by shooting them. With pics of javelina you must be in Arizona. Beautiful area you live in sir. Thanks for sharing.
You know who ate that before? Andrew ZImmern the guy who eats crazy stuff all over the world. Watched him eat some of it one day. Yea they stink. We get them in tx too.
This is at our home in the pine and cedars near Show Low Az.
Like I said I have tried them cooked a couple of ways and never found any that tasted good yet.
The feral hogs have gotten so bad in Alabama that it is a felony to transport one alive in the state. One landowner has put up electronic controlled gates on pens that he can control with his cellphone. He watches the pens on the phone and when he has enough in the pen at a time he triggers the gate. He has caught and killed 47 since July 4.

I've heard the the rat/rodent thing before and I think it's one of those urban legends. The Arizona Fish & Game Dept. says they are a member of the Peccary family. It's a species of animal that originates from South America according to these folks.
Thanks twice pop I had never heard that. I come from Wyo and we did not have them. Didn't/dont have feral hogs yet either (I don't think). Never had seen one til moving to AZ. in 62. Always heard for last 40 yrs that they were a rat.
Either one, it Still don't make them taste any better. LOL
Okay i see you live in Show low Az. Looking at your avatar i was thinking you lived around the Phoenix area, even though the pics looked like Northern Az. I once got a hunting ticket for hunting in Show low's city limits. We had no clue we were in the limits. Every where we looked there were Pine trees. Looked a lot where you live. But somehow the warden found us, and wrote us up.
