Hey can anyone help me out. I found this in my father in laws house. He has since pasted away. Can anybody tell me what type of gun and/or year it is? How much it's worth?

Look just ahead of the scratched in 44. It's marked factory marked .44 Magnum.
Dang sure is, that changes every thing that I said, sorry about misleading you. I have one and never paid attention to the .44 Mag, the big "44" should have given me some clue (duh), and looking closely it looks like the "44" may be chalked and not scratched, better pictures would help. Take that amount I mentioned and multiply it by about 7!!

It is a Ruger 44 Magnum Carbine Rifle the serial # 100-37095 indicates it was built in 1972.

It should have some kick to it if you have never shot large caliber weapons get some help with someone that knows, not thinks they know, how to handle them. Nice gun!

The lowest listed asking price is around $450.00 and an anniversary model lists around $1500.00

The following is from Rugers web site @
http://www.ruger.com/service/productHistory/RI-44Carbine.html

44 Carbine Rifle
(Manufactured from 1961 to 1974)
Caliber: .44 Magnum
Beginning Serial Number: Years of Production:
1 1961
1339 1962
65061 1963
85111 1964
94131 1965
104345 1966
113049 1967
126443 1968

100-31220 1972
100-41326 1973
100-50238 1974

The above chart shows the approximate first serial number shipped for the indicated year. This number should be used as a point of reference only. It is not necessarily the very first serial number shipped, but it can be used to determine the approximate year your Ruger firearm was shipped.

Ruger does not necessarily produce firearms in serial number order. There are occasions when blocks of serial numbers have been manufactured out of sequence, sometimes years later. Also, within a model family the same serial number prefix may be used to produce a variety of different models, all in the same block of serial numbers. And in some cases, firearms may be stored for a length of time before they are shipped.

For details on your specific serial number you may contact our Service Department: 336-949-5200

For serial numbers manufactured prior to our electronic records, or for an official letter confirming the details on your firearm please download and mail in the Request for Letter of Authenticity form.

You have a Deerslayer, which is a helluva good gun. Four-round tubular magazine, gas action. Very little recoil, but it's a noisy action - KWACK KWACK - at least mine is.

It was designed to use, and will not give you any trouble with, 240 grain jacketed soft point full power 44 magnum amunition. They don't like 180 grain bullets, it won't cycle with "mid-range" ammunition or 44 Specials, and if you use cast lead bullets it will clog up your gas port.

Feed it what it was designed to run on, and you and it will be happy.

It is an excellent deer and hog rifle out to around 125 yards. Great for the woods here in the east and south, where things are close - long-barreled bolt gun can tangle you up in the woods. Out west, with the big open spaces - eh, not so good.

Last deer I shot with mine, it put a half-inch hole clean through him and he ran about forty feet.

I'm pretty sure the "44" was done with a vibrating engraver used for marking personal property. I' ve had one since the 70s. Needless to say it sure hurts the value of what is otherwise a nice gun.

While it is too bad that those numbers were etched into the side of the receiver - I don't see it as a major catastrophe. You could just have the receiver refinished, and it wouldn't be very expensive to do. Heck - you might even be able to return it to Ruger and have THEM refinish it for you.

But if it just 'ruins your day' and puts a frown on your face to have it like it is - PM me and I'll be happy to take it off your hands and help out;)!!!!! That is a nice little Carbine!
